August 3, 2004 -- ASHLEE Simpson wraps her eight-episode MTV series tomorrow — and could return for a second go-round.
Jessica Simpson's kid sister turned out to be a revelation for MTV, with "Ashlee Simpson" averaging 2.9 million total viewers a week — close behind viewership for "Newlyweds," MTV's reality show featuring big sister Jessica Simpson and hubby Nick Lachey (3.5 million total viewers on average).
In MTV's core demo of persons 12-34, "Ashlee" is averaging 2.1 million viewers, while "Newlyweds" is averaging 2.5 million viewers.
MTV isn't commenting on a second season of "Ashlee Simpson," but insiders say it's likely, given the show's strong numbers and the popularity of the brunette recording star.
"Ashlee Simpson" documented Simpson's recording of her new CD, "Autobiography," following her day-to-day life.
On tomorrow's finale (10:30 p.m.), cameras follow Ashlee in the 24 hours leading up to the release of the CD — as she sits for interviews with David Letterman, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa and Rolling Stone magazine.
"Autobiography" was ranked No. 2 on amazon.com yesterday. It was officially released July 20 to generally positive reviews.
