The Surreal Life (WB, Thursdays)

    The Surreal Life
    Thursdays 9:30/8:30c
    Premieres Jan. 9, 9/8c

When the stars fall from sight ... this is where they crash.

Once they were superstars. Now, they're back in the spotlight as they share a home and a series of outrageous and life-changing events for ten days and nights that can only be described as surreal.

The recipe for The Surreal Life is a simple one: Take seven bigger-than-life celebrities from every genre of the entertainment industry - rap music, heavy metal, feature films, sitcom, drama, and even reality television itself. Throw them together under pressure. Stir.

Trapped without transportation, cell phones or personal assistants, they must interact with each other, share bedrooms and bathrooms, do household chores, go grocery shopping and prepare meals together. The cameras never stop rolling, so the power struggles and personality clashes are all captured on film - along with the very real new friendships.

    The familiar faces include:
MC Hammer, Emmanuel Lewis, Brande Roderick, Corey Feldman, Gabrielle Carteris, Vince Neil, and Jerri Manthey.

A group camping trip, "Naked Sushi" night, a softball game, a unique backyard talent show and a surprising Hollywood wedding ... it's all part of everyday life - and it's always surreal.

Rick Telles and Cris Abrego (Road Rules) and Mark Cronin (The Howard Stern Show) created the series and serve as executive producers, along with Jay Renfroe and David Garfinkle (Blind Date). The Surreal Life is produced by Brass Ring Productions, Mindless Entertainment and Renegade Productions.

    MC Hammer

Known for his amazing dance talent and his spectacular performances, as well as his flamboyant wardrobe and energetic personal style, Hammer is both an American success story and a cautionary tale. Very few artists have experienced such a meteoric rise, followed by an equally impressive decline. Regardless, what remains today is his singular contribution: Hammer broke down numerous doors for rap music in the mainstream and demonstrated that hip-hop had the potential for blockbuster success in the marketplace.
Hammer was born Stanley Kirk Burrell and raised in Oakland, California. His first break came when he landed a job as a ball boy for the Oakland A's, where he entertained fans by dancing during game breaks and earned the nickname "Hammer" for his resemblance to all-time home run leader "Hammerin'" Hank Aaron.

An aspiring baseball player, Hammer was unable to break into professional baseball, so he and gave up his dreams and enlisted in the Navy for three years. Upon his return from the Navy, he began performing at local clubs and, with help from several of his athlete friends, started his own record label. Recording singles and selling them out of the trunk of his car, he marketed himself relentlessly. In 1987, Hammer recorded "Feel My Power" and impressed a Capitol Records executive with his elaborate live dance show. Soon afterward, he signed a multi-album deal.

Hammer's 1988 debut, Let's Get It Started, paved the way for his massive breakthrough effort, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em, which sold millions and established him as the most popular hip-hop artist of the era. The mega-single "U Can't Touch This" was unavoidable in 1990, playing regularly on radio and MTV.
For 1991's Too Legit to Quit, Hammer dropped the "MC" from his name, but kept the trademark wholesome pop-rap sound that had won over millions of fans worldwide. The single became his second big smash, but a credibility backlash was growing, giving him the sense that his popularity was waning. In 1994, Hammer returned with a new album and a grittier, street-thug image, which drew criticism from both critics and fans. Subsequent releases fared even more poorly. By 1997, Hammer had declared bankruptcy and announced his choice to use his musical talents to praise God and emphasize traditional family values.

Hammer currently resides in Oakland, CA with his family. In his spare time he enjoys going to the movies, dancing, playing sports and spending time with his family.

    Emmanuel Lewis

Emmanuel Lewis returns to primetime television in The WB's The Surreal Life as a series regular for the first time since he played the title role on the '80s sitcom Webster.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Lewis began his career at the age of 9, when he started doing national and regional commercials. Among his first jobs was Jell-O Pudding, part of a successful campaign featuring Bill Cosby. He had been in over 50 commercials when he was tapped to do a series of national spots for Burger King. Those spots won him a CLIO award for Best Male Actor and also landed a leading role on Webster. In 1985, 1986 and 1987, Lewis won the People's Choice Award for Best Young Television Performer for his work on Webster.

After Webster Lewis enrolled in Clark Atlanta University and earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Theatre Arts. He also continued working in television throughout the '90s, making guest appearances on various series including Family Matters, Moesha and Malcolm & Eddie.

Next up for Lewis is a cameo in the upcoming David Spade feature Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, where he will appear alongside WB star Alyssa Milano.

Lewis splits his time between Atlanta and Los Angeles. When not working, he enjoys fishing and loves music. In addition, he is a black belt in karate.

    Brande Roderick

Television viewers will recognize the beautiful bombshell Brande Roderick from her role as lifeguard Leigh Dryer in the long-running series Baywatch, which lives on in syndication around the world.
A native of Northern California, Roderick always knew she wanted to become an actress. She attended Santa Rosa Junior College and later moved to San Francisco where she began living her dream, working in a number of independent films and commercials. With the experience and confidence she gained, she headed for Tinseltown and within her first year in town, landed a role on the famed Aaron Spelling drama Beverly Hills, 90210.

Luck came Roderick's way when she was asked to audition for the role of Leigh Dryer on Baywatch and was selected from among hundreds of actresses being considered. In addition to her work on Baywatch, she has also done guest star roles on Just Shoot Me, Jesse and Love Boat: The Next Wave, in addition to a string of national commercials for products such as Snickers, Mentos and Dr. Pepper.

Brande has worked steadily in television and film. Already in the can are the feature Dracula II: Ascension, in which she stars opposite Jason London and Roy Scheider, and the new Baywatch Reunion, which will be released in February 2003. Currently she is traveling the United States for E!'s Wild On series, which will begin airing in January 2003. Additionally, Roderick's momentum has given her the opportunity to produce and star in an independent film, Miss Castaway, written by Bryan Michel Stoller.
In 2000, Roderick was selected to appear in April's issue of Playboy magazine and in 2001 she was named Playmate of the Year.

Roderick currently resides in Los Angeles with her cocker spaniel, Mercedes. When not working, she likes playing softball, hiking in the canyons and bowling.

    Corey Feldman

Having appeared on both the small and silver screens for the last 28 years, Feldman is now one of the few actors in the industry who can call himself a hyphenate.
Born and raised in Reseda, Calif. Corey landed his first job - a national commercial for McDonald's - by the time he was three years old. It was the first of a string of 80 commercials he did before he was seven. At the age of eight, Feldman got his first big break as Regi Tower on the television series The Bad News Bears. The series didn't last, but it got him noticed, and it wasn't long before he was all over prime-time television, in film and in guest starring roles on series.

The silver screen came calling during this time as well. Feldman's feature film credits include Gremlins, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning and Steven Spielberg's The Goonies in 1986. In 1986, Feldman starred in Stand By Me, in which he played emotionally troubled youth Teddy Duchamp.

In 1987, Corey Feldman joined fellow young actor Corey Haim in the feature film The Lost Boys. This teaming was the first of several features starring the two Coreys, including License to Drive, Dream a Little Dream and, later, Blown Away.
After starring with Tom Hanks in The 'Burbs, Feldman voiced Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III while his film career cooled slightly. During this time, Corey got married, battled various drug and legal problems, and eventually got divorced. He rebounded and returned to the movies in Round Trip to Heaven and Meatballs 4. He continued to work steadily during the '90s in both film and television.

His part in Tales From the Crypt: Bordello of Blood was the role that helped to bring Feldman back into the public's eye. He followed that part with the ambitious project Busted, which he wrote, starred in and directed. By 1998, he was out of the film studio and in the recording studio with his band Truth Movement, which released their debut CD Still Searching For Soul in December of that year.

Today Corey stays busy touring with his band, doing small movies and spending time with his new bride Susie Sprague. Currently, he resides in Los Angeles.

    Gabrielle Carteris

Television audiences will recognize Gabrielle Carteris for her role as "Andrea Zuckerman" on Aaron Spelling's Beverly Hills, 90210.
Born in Scottsdale, Arizona and raised in Northern California, Gabrielle grew up loving the arts. She received a scholarship to San Francisco School of Ballet and after eight years of dance she began studying acting at the American Conservatory of Theatre in San Francisco. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence with a degree in Liberal Arts.

Carteris later moved to London to study theatre with teachers from both The London Academy of Music and Arts and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She then returned to New York to pursue an acting career.

Since 90210, Gabrielle has dedicated much of her life to working with youth including programs for D.A.R.E., the Noxzema Extraordinary Teen program, M.A.D.D. and Read to Grow.

During her five seasons on 90210, Carteris began a career as a producer, creating a series of specials called Lifestories. After 90210, she went on to produce and host her own talk show, Gabrielle.
Gabrielle is the proud mother of two girls, and last year she returned to television with special guest appearances on Strong Medicine, N.Y.P.D. Blue and For The People.

Currently living in Los Angeles, she enjoys playing tennis, knitting, skiing, making jewelry and spending quality time with her family.

    Vince Neil

Vince Neil is the quintessential rock 'n roll front man. Having spent over two decades as lead singer of the legendary hell-raising metal band Mötley Crüe, Neil is the very personification of rock 'n' roll decadence and excess.
Mötley Crüe first got started in 1981. Their sound was a unique blend of metal and punk with a little melodic pop thrown in. It was to become the rock sound of the '80s. Early buzz was so great that it lead to a record deal with one of the major record labels and by 1983, the Crüe's Shout at the Devil went triple-platinum. They went on to tour extensively, party even more extensively and record the subsequent multi-million sellers Theatre of Pain, Girls, Girls, Girls and Dr. Feelgood.

After a decade of fronting Mötley Crüe with great success, Neil and the band separated, albeit temporarily. Vince recorded two solo albums, Exposed and Carved in Stone. During the release of the second album, Neil tragically lost his young daughter Skylar and in memory of her he wrote "Skylar's Song." Later that year, Neil founded The Skylar Neil Memorial Golf Tournament that is held annually in her honor.

An unsuccessful attempt at replacing Vince led to a reunion with the band in 1995. Since then, Mötley Crüe has set up its own label, Motley Records, and re-released expanded editions of its entire back catalog as well as a greatest hits package and various other compilations including a studio album New Tattoo. The band successfully completed its second annual Maximum Rock tour last summer and their tell-all autobiography, The Dirt hit bookstores last May.

Currently, Neil has been on the road promoting his upcoming solo album, which will be released on his own record label. Beyond Music/VNS Records.

Neil currently resides in Las Vegas with his fiancée.

    Jerri Manthey

Best known to American television audiences from her appearances on Survivor: The Australian Outback, Jerri Manthey is the sexy, adventurous and spontaneous newcomer to The Surreal Life.
Jerri was born in Bad Konstatt Hospital on the Army base in Stuttgart, Germany. Her father served 28 years in the United States Army, making her the quintessential "army brat," and she moved every three to four years, spending a total of 12 years on various Army bases in Germany. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Maryland in Munich, Germany.

Manthey moved to Los Angeles six years prior to filming Survivor to pursue her lifelong dream of acting. She appeared in numerous independent films and commercials, including in Showtime's festival hit Destiny and That Championship Season. Most recently she wrote, produced and directed Beautiful Chao, a play that premiered at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles.

Following her sudden stardom on Survivor, Manthey appeared on The Young and the Restless and Hollywood Squares, as well as appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show, Craig Kilborn, and Howard Stern.

In 2001, Jerri appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine, an issue that rapidly became the most popular issue of the year.

Manthey currently resides in Los Angeles with her dog Gidget and cat Kiya. When not busy working, she enjoys photography, cooking, painting, writing, reading and her all-time favorite, camping, hiking and/or backpacking to very remote places. Although known for her bongo playing, she's also taken up the guitar.

There's a QuickTime version of their commercial which is pretty funny, located HERE.

They start off all sugar sweet and nice, and by the end, everything they say to each other sounds like an Osbournes episode.

I wish I had the WB, so I could watch this. It looks like it will be a hilarious show. They should really have picked this up on a major network.
