    Phil Keoghan and Discovery Team up for NOW

    Discovery, Keoghan Team to Fulfill Dreams
    (Tuesday, November 11 02:41 PM)

    LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Amazing Race" host Phil Keoghan had a near-death experience when he was 19.

    Working for a TV adventure show in his native New Zealand, Keoghan became disoriented during a dive to explore a shipwreck and found himself lost among the vessel's corridors. He began breathing to fast for the regulator on his air tank, took in some water and eventually blacked out.

    Next he knew, he was back on the surface being treated by his fellow crew members. He was okay, but he says the experience "changed me profoundly." He quickly began making a list of things he wanted to do before he died, and he's spent the rest of his life doing them.

    Now, Keoghan and the Discovery Channel are turning that philosophy into a TV series called "No Opportunity Wasted" -- "NOW!" for short. The show will give people three days and $3,000 to live out a dream, whether it's watching the sun rise from the first place in the world to see daylight or auditioning for a Broadway show.

    "In essence, it is about learning how to live while you still have the chance," Keoghan says. "... It is about swerving off the road you've been following for years, and onto a strange and bumpy path that just might (if you're lucky) get you lost. It is about becoming a bit of a bad-ass, in spite of your nice dependable self."

    The show is accepting applications at www.discovery.com through Dec. 31. Production will begin early next year, with the show scheduled to premiere in late 2004.

    Ready to "do your dream" on national TV? You've come to the right place. But first, before you download our application, here are just a few guidelines (see more in the application itself).
    You must be:

    * a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien;
    * over 18 years old (if you're a minor, we'll need written permission from a parent or legal guardian);
    * a U.S. passport holder or an applicant for one that will be valid by December 2003 and through December 2004 (for international dreams only) or a foreign passport holder with a valid green card;
    * ready to travel at a moment's notice as determined by the producers at their sole discretion with the limited resources and small budget they provide;
    * available for up to seven consecutive days; and
    * physically and mentally capable of performing your selected dream as certified by a licensed physician.

    Your dream should be:

    * original, multi-layered and unique. Think of something that has never been done before and things that money can't buy.
    * creative, exciting, challenging and fun!
    * achievable in 72 hours or less and with $3,000 or less.
    * for up to four people. Every participant will need to fill out a separate application; please send them in together. One three-minute video per dream is fine. It's OK for your dream to involve more than four people as participants, as long as they are not the creators of the dream.

    Need ideas? Click here for some examples.

    Your next steps are:

    * to download our application by clicking on the link below, going to "file: save as" and saving it to your C drive. Then just open it from your C drive, carefully fill it out and print it.
    * to sign your application with the Terms and Conditions, Waiver and Release of Liability (one per applicant, please).
    * to send us a three-minute videotape (one per dream) in which you describe your dream and the elements that make it up. Please tell us also why you should be picked for NOW. We will only consider tapes up to three minutes in length (VHS only no MiniDV, Hi8, etc.). Any and all materials submitted to DCI and/or the producers as part of this application shall become the property of the producers and will not be returned. The tape may be used as part of the program or as part of the promotion of the program.
    * to write down your dream experience in one 8" x 11" page. We will only consider up to 750 words. Describe, step by step, exactly how you imagine this experience unfolding in chronological order. What do you want to achieve? Be very specific. Where exactly does it take place? How are you going to rely on your imagination? Include your (brief) budget on the dream description page. Staple to the application.
    * to postmark your application materials by Dec. 31, 2003. The producers and DCI reserve the right to extend this deadline at their sole discretion and to change the application in parts or in its entirety.

    Limit one application per applicant.

    No Opportunity Wasted the series is co-produced by No Opportunity Wasted TV Inc. and Discovery Communications, Inc. The producers will select the participants and/or the dreams to be featured as part of this TV programming at their sole discretion.

    What a fun thing for a show! I can't think of anything I would ask to do that would be show worthy. But I am looking forward to seeing what other people come up with for their dream.

    I love this idea! This sounds like a very fun show. I also can't think of anything unique. My dreams are very cliche, like going to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower or to swim with the dolphins! But it will be cool to see what people come up with.

    I just wanted to dig up this thread as the deadline for applications for the first season is approaching. It's such a cool idea for a show. I'm hoping a FORTer goes for it

    *digs up really old thread*

    Just wondering, who's all going to watch it? I sure will, it sounds like a really good show. And having Phil is an added bonus.

    This show FINALLY premieres -- this SUNDAY, Oct 3.

    My Satellite Direct guide has Phil on the cover.

    I, for one, can't wait to see it. It sounds like a much-needed positive show (which sadly means it likely won't get great ratings -- but I'm going to do my part and give it a shot on Sunday anyways )
