Reality claims Roseanne's "Domestic Goddess" show, may claim reality show too

Roseanne's Show Canceled Due to Illness

    Monday, August 18, 2003

NEW YORK Roseanne Barr's (search) hysterectomy has forced the cancellation of her upcoming cooking show, "Domestic Goddess," and may claim the ABC reality show leading up to it.

The 50-year-old comedian-actress is due to undergo the operation this week.

"Domestic Goddess" (search) was to begin airing Sept. 20 on the ABC Family (search) cable channel. Production had only recently begun and no completed episodes were available to broadcast, a network spokeswoman said.

However, ABC is in the midst of airing a reality series in which cameras followed Barr as she pitched "Domestic Goddess" to various networks.

Two half-hour episodes of "The Real Roseanne Show" (search) are scheduled to air each Wednesday through Sept. 17, setting up "Domestic Goddess." Production on the ABC network shows is already complete.

ABC is taking a "hard look" at whether it should cancel the reality series, as well, spokesman Kevin Brockman said Monday.

One point of the ABC show was to build anticipation for "Domestic Goddess," and if that series has been shelved, ABC has to decide whether it's worthwhile to continue, he said.

Ratings may make the decision easier. The Aug. 6 premiere of "The Real Roseanne Show" drew fewer than 5.5 million viewers, ranking it No. 59 for the week.

    Other Shoe Drops on 'Roseanne'
    (Tuesday, August 19 01:56 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - With ABC Family deciding to drop Roseanne Barr's "Domestic Goddess Hour," it was only a matter of time before its "making-of" documentary got the hook as well.

As expected, ABC has cancelled "The Real Roseanne Show," which chronicled Roseanne Barr's attempts to return to television with a sort of lifestyle-cooking-talk show that was to have been called "The Domestic Goddess Hour" on ABC Family.

"The Real Roseanne" was designed to build interest for "The Domestic Goddess Hour," which was scheduled to premiere Sept. 20 on ABC Family. Instead, neither end of the gambit worked out.

A combination of factors -- including pending hysterectomy surgery for Barr and a never-nailed-down concept for the show -- led ABC Family to shut down production. Anemic ratings for "The Real Roseanne" may also have played a part. After debuting to about 5.5 million viewers two weeks ago, the show's audience dropped to 4.4 million people last week.
ABC will air repeats of "George Lopez" and a combination of new and old episodes of "The Drew Carey Show" in the 9 p.m. Wednesday timeslot until the fall season begins in late September.

By all means, ABC, flood us with lame re-runs.

I'm sorry to hear Roseanne's going in for surgery. I didn't watch all of "Real Roseanne" mostly because it was showing against Wednesday's Big Brother. But I liked what I saw while flipping during commercials.
