Patriots vs. Panthers
180 mins.
After 30 years, the Big Game returns to Houston, but the hard-hitting Panthers-Patriots matchup at ultramodern Reliant Stadium may be better suited to the neighboring Astrodome, the NFL's old “House of Pain.” (Live)
Both John Fox, who took over a 1-15 Carolina team in 2002, and Bill Belichick of the Patriots, bidding for their second title in three years, send out punishing defenses. “We're in an age when everyone wants to see the great throw, the great catch; but so often it just comes down how physical and tough you are,” says analyst Phil Simms, who teams with Greg Gumbel in the booth. “It's the result of a lot of teaching and is just a way of life for both these teams.”
Veterans Ty Law and Rodney Harrison head the hit parade for New England, which led the NFL in interceptions and is riding a 14-game winning streak. For Carolina, effective rushing by Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster would limit the exposure for inexperienced QB Jake Delhomme. Unflappable Patriots QB Tom Brady, a former Super Bowl MVP like Simms, faces a fierce Panthers pass rush from sack artists Julius Peppers, Mike Rucker and Kris Jenkins. “Both teams are what I call 'game managers',” says Simms. “They keep the tempo in their favor and their style almost tells you it has to be a close game. Even when they dominate, they only win by seven to 10 points.”
