The race continues in Surabaya on the island of Java in Indonesia. The first clue sends them to Antika Jaya Padang Restaurant.

In their search for the restaurant, Natalie and Nadiya run into Trey and Lexi who were second to open the destination clue. While they are fumbling around with directions, James and Jaymes catch up with them as do Abbie and Ryan and the four teams figure out they need to take takxis.

ROADBLOCK: Who wants to serve a balanced meal.

Teams must serve up 20 plates of food all at once. They must balance all 20 plates on their arms and serve a table Padang style. If they drop a plate, they must start over. Once they have successfully delivered the plates of food all at once, the manager will hand them their next clue. (To be partially fair, the plates are for the most part small bowls.)

DESTINATION

They must travel by train from Surabaya to the town of Bangil. A clue is to be found during the train ride.

On the first train which leaves at 7:36 AM are:

James and Jaymes
Abbie and Ryan
Trey and Lexi
Josh and Brent
James and Abba

Natalie and Nadiya buy a ticket for the first train, but miss it. They, along with the remaining teams must wait for the 10:55 AM train.

The clue found in Vendors' wares being carried along the train aisle is for a

DETOUR: Egg Head or Lion’s Head. (Pashuran)

Egg Head
: (Taboose) Teams must have their heads lit on fire (actually a scooped out coconut they hold on their heads) and two magicians will cook two eggs over the flame. Once the eggs are fried, the handlers dump on some hot sauce and they must eat the plate of eggs. First they must pick up four eggs at a farmers’ market then ride in a beja (?) to the park. Once they have successfully eaten the prepared eggs, they will receive their next clue.

Josh and Brent finish first

Gary and Will on the U-Turn

Lion’s Head: Teams must join a traditional Javanese procession known as Reog. They will make their way to the park by beja (?) where they must dress in costume and wear a giant mask that weighs over 40 lbs. With the music from a local band, they will parade down the street, stopping along the way to perform a dance. Once they have successfully made their way back into the park, they will receive their next clue.

As the first group completes the Detour, the group on the second train boards in Surabaya. (I’ll list them in the order they complete the tasks, though they are far behind the first group.

DESTINATION

Perliman Pos I where a Blind double U-Turn is set up. When the teams state their decisions, they will get their next clue. If one, possibly two teams are U-Turned, they must go back and complete the task they didn’t choose the first time.

Blind double U-Turn

The first group of five teams decides not to use the U-Turn and opens a clue to the Pit Stop.

Rob and Kelley U-Turn Gary and Will

Gary and Will don’t know if Rob and Kelley or Caitlin and Brittany are behind them and choose to
U-Turn Rob and Kelley.

DESTINATION

SMA Negeri 1 High School - Green House

Phil waits for the teams surrounded by young ladies dressed in school garb sitting in bleachers and a young lady as the welcoming committee of one.

Order:

Abbie and Ryan, who win a trip to Fiji
Trey and Lexi
James and Jaymes
James and Abba
Josh and Brent
Natalie and Nadiya
Rob and Kelley
Gary and Will
Caitlin and Brittany: PHILIMINATED (They run into driver karma and fall further behind Gary and Will who had to complete the second task, though they do hit the mat right behind them.)

Teams talking stuff:

Natalie and Nadiya are still in a loose alliance with Trey and Lexi.

James is from Virginia and Jaymes is from Maine; both now Chippendale dancers in Las Vegas.

Abbie and Ryan are competitive with each other and that may be their main obstacle.

Josh tells us that the teams are split into two factions – the alpha teams who are really focused and the rest who are doing their best.

Abba sees that they are underrated because of their looks, but once they get a chance to run, they might surprise everybody.

Caitlin and Brittany tell us that the race is the biggest thing they’ve been involved in, but we’ll see them mad before we see them cry. Brittany: I may get punched in the face and you won’t see me cry. There’s no crying in baseball.

Gary and Will are a cautionary tale to super fans who want to go on the race. Gary fears they’ve become that team where the viewers will wonder, “What are they doing there?”

At the restaurant, Nadiya found it relaxing to have Natalie yelling at her during the task.

On the train, James makes a deal with three of the teams to not use the upcoming U Turn as they are already ahead of the pack. He tells us that long hair don’t care is riding in the back of the train and they don’t know what is going on with them.

When cramming themselves into the beja (?) cycle, James and Jaymes explain that Indonesia is not made for two 6’4” gentlemen.

The teams participating in Lion’s head discover that they have to hold up the weight of the head with their mouths.

James doesn’t know how many Indonesian people he made out with just by placing the holding bar in his mouth. But shouts encouragement…”Just take it all in. We’re in Indonesia with a Lion’s head on.”

Abba: It was a hot time in the old Lion tonight, man.

On the second train, Caitlin and Brittany figure out that the first train group is way ahead and, after taking a look around, consider themselves the leaders in this second group as they are a lot stronger than the others and can easily beat them.

At the Pit Stop, Lexi says that Abbie and Ryan are a huge threat as they are the only ones who can go for $2,000,000.

At the Pit Stop, Abba says they have to run their own race and not be in the pack.
