    The Magicians - SyFy

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ma....S._TV_series)

The Magicians is a fantasy television series that premiered on Syfy and Showcase on December 16, 2015, as a special preview. The rest of the series is scheduled to premiere on January 25, 2016.[1][2][3] It is based on the novel of the same name by Lev Grossman. A 13-episode series order was placed in May 2015.[4] Michael London, Janice Williams, John McNamara, and Sera Gamble serve as executive producers.

Quentin Coldwater enrolls at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy to be trained as a magician, where he discovers that the magical world from his favorite childhood books is real and poses a danger to humanity. Meanwhile, the life of his childhood friend Julia is derailed when she is denied entry, and she searches for magic elsewhere.
Saw the first episode On Demand it was absolutely fantastic.

The Magicians is a fantasy novel by the American author Lev Grossman, published in 2009 by Viking Press. It tells the story of Quentin Coldwater, a young man who discovers and attends a college of magic in New York.
The novel received critical acclaim, and was followed by The Magician King (2011)[1][2] and The Magician's Land (2014). It was adapted as a television series, and currently airs on SyFy.
In 2011, Fox optioned but eventually declined to order a television adaptation of The Magicians. In July 2014, SyFy greenlit the production of a pilot episode,[7] and ordered a 12 episode first season which will air in January 2016.[8]

The SyFy series is written by John McNamara and Sera Gamble, and produced by Michael London and Janice Williams.[7] The pilot episode was directed by Mike Cahill, and the cast includes Jason Ralph as Quentin,[9] Olivia Taylor Dudley as Alice, Hale Appleman as Eliot, Summer Bishil as Margo Hanson (renamed from Janet in the novel),[10] Arjun Gupta as Penny, Stella Maeve as Julia, and Rick Worthy as Dean Fogg.[8][11]

The series ages the characters up to Graduate school students, and compresses the Brakebills degree to three years. Jane Chatwin is involved earlier and more heavily, and Quentin is more formally diagnosed with depression.[12]
The Magicians won the 2010 Alex Award, given to ten adult books that are appealing to young adults, and the 2011 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer.[6]
    Sera Gamble:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sera_Gamble

Sera Gamble worked on Supernatural for its first seven seasons. She contributed some thirty scripts for the series and was made an executive producer in season five. At the end of the fifth season, creator Eric Kripke stepped down as head writer of the series and Gamble was chosen as his successor. She served as the series' showrunner beginning with the sixth season, and ending with the end of the seventh season.[5] Gamble chose to step down from her post as showrunner and executive producer on Supernatural at the end of the seventh season in order to "focus on developing other material" for Warner Bros. Television, including pilots for ABC and The CW television networks.[6] She was replaced by Being Human executive producer Jeremy Carver, who served on Supernatural from seasons 3 to 5.[6]

I also saw the premiere episode On Demand and am looking forward to the series very much.

Thanks for posting the aging revelations because I was having trouble reconciling the characters as Freshmen.

The Magicians Season 1 Episode 1
    Unauthorized Magic
Aired Monday 9:00 PM Jan 25, 2016 on Syfy

    The Magicians - Season 1, Episode 1: Unauthorized Magic - TV.com

In the premiere of this drama adapted from Lev Grossman's book series, best friends Quentin and Julia are mysteriously recruited to take an entrance exam to Brakebills University, a secret institution for magical pedagogy.
Did you ever have a feeling that there was more to your life than what you had? Well what's missing from your life is magic. So if you ever receive an invitation to sit for an entrance exam to Brakebills University TAKE IT.

That is the start of this episode and you will finds tons that seem familiar especially if you are a Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia fan. Beautifully done and mesmerizing to watch. I really haven't had that feeling for any of the 2015/2016 shows although The Syfy's The Expanse comes in a distance second. Mucho congratulations to The Syfy network for doing a brilliant job and having not one but two really good TV shows on the air.

The Magicians Season 1 Episode 2
    The Source of Magic
Aired Monday 9:00 PM Jan 25, 2016 on Syfy

The Magicians - Season 1, Episode 2: The Source of Magic - TV.com

Quentin is distraught as he faces expulsion for his involvement in an otherworldly attack on Brakebills; at the same time, Julia delves deeper into underground magic and takes a test to prove herself to the Hedge Witches.
The first episode ended pretty dramatically with a beast that came through the mirror after the four summoned it and then left because they thought nothing happened, or at least that is what seemed happened. Then the beast attacks the Dean of the school and it looks as if it broke the Dean's hands (needed to cast spells) and then ripped the dean's eyes out. The second episode starts right after that with the beast being held off and Quentin fainting and eventually thinking Penny (his roommate and one of the four who cast the summoning spell) ratted him out and Q's in a high snick thinking he will be expelled. Paralleling this is Julia's (Q's friend) being found by a group of hedge witches and invited to join and learn. What's funny is how high and mighty the hedge witches seem they are and yet they are using Kady (Penny's current booty and one of the four who cast the summoning spell) as a conduit into Brakebills and are using her to steal spell books and objects of power.

Q is also a person of interest to the Dean and the Specialist.

    Main Characters:
    Quentin Coldwater
Penny - Q's roommate - one of the four who cast the summoning spell
    Julia - Q's lifelong friend
Alice - looking for her brother who disappeared from Brakebills - one of the four who cast the summoning spell
Kady Orloff-Diaz -thief/smuggler for the hedge witches - one of the four who cast the summoning spell
No goat killers on my island.

I enjoyed the first two episodes. Seems as though there are moles inside the school & people working at cross purposes. Harry Potter grows up, even the "smart" girl referred to the Weasleys.

Yup. Maybe they originally planned this for a different network? That sex scene between Penny & Cady was not network TV safe.

The Magicians Season 1 Episode 3
    Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting
Aired Monday 9:00 PM Feb 01, 2016 on Syfy

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ma....S._TV_series)

Alice and Quentin find out that her brother, Charlie, was consumed by magic and turned into a niffin five years previously. When they find him, he acts maliciously and they bind him. Julia struggles to balance learning magic with maintaining her previous life. Eliot searches for the book that Kady stole for Marina, which leads Quentin and him to the hedge witches, where Quentin confronts Julia. Penny, after being incorrectly assigned a psychic discipline, discovers he is a "traveller," and could have the ability to travel between worlds.
This is an episode that shows how dangerous magic can be especially if you don't do your research. What's funny in the opening scenes the kids are in class and that is exactly what the Dean says, the one who had his eyes plucked out by the moth man and this scene is super imposed on seeing Julie trying spells in the hedge witch hangout. Alice who is so determined on finding out what happened to her death/missing brother Charlie but she is not patient to the point she is finding all these spells that have disastrous consequences such as summoning the moth man who killed a professor and injured the Dean and this episode possibly activating a malicious spirit near the haunted fountain.

As a sidebar there is the student Charlie helped who tried to make herself more beautiful but instead melted half her face. Julie on the other hand is so obsessed with magic that her boyfriend thinks she is cheating on him but when she tells him she has an addiction problem and is attending Narcotics Anonymous he believes her as she does look a wreck.
