    YES! My thoughts exactly.

Did anyone see the singing send-off that Seth McFarlane and Bill Maher did? I quite liked it.

    Re: All Talk Shows

Sorry, but there's no comparison to Carson's classy send off and what Leno did. Oprah and Jack Black would have been bad enough without the addition of Kim Kardashian. Just cringe worthy. I couldn't help but think their two goodbyes just summed up both of them as hosts. One was over-the-top and silly, while the other was low-key and classy.

All these years later, Leno is still sucking up to Carson, when Johnny always wanted Dave to take over the show. I still remember Letterman's opening monologue after Johnny died. It was all jokes that Johnny had sent Dave after he retired. I thought it was such a lovely tribute. Maybe I'm biased against Leno. I just don't think he's funny and I know enough about him from people who worked for and around him.

I'm thrilled that Fallon is taking over. I thought his "goodbye" over on Late Night was classy and sweet.

Jay Leno is a decent comedian but I always thought he was a TERRIBLE interviewer. 90% of his questions, to guests, were closed ended. That's not how you keep a conversation going. After all his years on tv he never improved those skills which is why I'd watch his monologue and then change the channel.

Very true. I think that both Jay and Dave have fallen into the lazy routine of relying too heavily on preinterview notes. With both of them it's very obvious that some producer has told them "this guest has a funny story about X". They don't even try to casually bring that up. They will simply say "so tell your story about X". Boring!

    Re: All Talk Shows

Did anyone else watch the premiere of Late Night with Seth Meyers last night? I woke myself up for the monologue and ended up staying awake for the entire show. I think it has a lot of promise. He didn't hit it out of the ball park, but he will. Not too long ago, I went back and watched the very first Weekend Update he did with Amy, and I think his performance last night showed a similar level of nerves. Once he's comfortable with how the whole thing works and can fall into it, it's going to be great. I'd read he said several places that the interviews were what he was most nervous for. Oddly, I thought the interview segments went the smoothest. The monologue was well written. He just needs to make some adjustments from his Weekend Update voice to a monologue voice, and adjust the flow accordignly. If I were a consultant giving him advice for that, I'd tell him to go back and watch the voice he used for the White House Correspondence dinner where he seemed to be talking to people more, instead of trying to match his Weekend Update delivery. All in all I'd say the first show was not fantastic, but showed promise to become something really great.

Regarding Late Night with Seth Meyers....

I really like him, but I thought it was flat. I was so bored, I turned it off before the interviews, which I heard were good. (I did like the part where he was just chatting with the audience about the flat tire and his trip with his wife. He was very relaxed and personable there. But all of the "bits" went on too long and weren't all that funny to begin with.)

I hope he can improve enough for it to work, because he's fun to watch when he's doing stuff that works for his personality.

P.S. I remember how bad Jimmy Fallon's first Late Night show was, and Seth's was much better.

    Re: All Talk Shows

After watching Seth Meyers' night 2 monologue, it seems like someone told him to interact with the audience more, and he went a bit overboard. Hopefully he's following the Goldilocks principle and tonight will be just right.

I don't know why I'm so fascinated with statistics and ratings, it wasn't something I was interested in highschool.

To create Q Scores, executive vice president Henry Schafer and his team provides a celebrity's name and a brief description to more than 1,800 viewers. The viewers are asked if they recognize the person, and how they feel about him or her. The average Positive Q Score for a celebrity is 15.

I think the biggest shock is Colbert at the top of late night shows. He plays a character, not being himself. Fascinating.

Surprised also at Michael Symon being so high up. I like him, but I read more negative chatter than positive.

Not surprising that Michael Strahan scores high, he was obviously the best choice. Am a little surprised that the likeability gap between Strahan and Kelly is so large!
