Second season. I dont' think previous seasons are available anywhere - there are so many twists and turns to this show, I'd love to go back and watch it from the beginning.

I'm wondering who 'she' is. Zoey maybe?

Does the machine want to be set free?

I always watch each episode twice, since in the rewatch I catch things I missed the first time.

Love how they're tying Elias into the s/ls.

how ironic that the machine deemed Nathan irrelevant.

You are making it sound as if the machine picked Nathan to become irrelevant. All the machine does is create a list of folks who become irrelevant through circumstance or their own actions. Nathan choosing to expose the machine is what him irrelevant.

that's not how I understood how the irrelevant list is made. Simply that they're not considered threats to society, not terrorists, etc, just everyday people.

Isn't that what it says during the opening credits?

Check your local library. Ours gets TV shows on DVD, and you can borrow them one disc at a time. And I hate to tell you this, but I'm confused a lot too! Fortunately my husband watches too, and I'm always asking him to clarify what I don't understand.

I would definitely recommend re-watching (or watching for the first time) the whole first season. We bought it on Blu-Ray, and I picked up on things I've missed and/or forgotten about.

One thing I liked about re-watching the first season is that in watching it more quickly than we would normally at once a week (or much less), I was able to see the relationship between Finch and Reese go from distrust and wariness to fierce loyalty. In the first episode this season, when Reese was telling the camera he needed information about Finch because he was his friend, and the only one he had, it tugged at my heart.

A video of the main title sequence is available at CBS' website. Spoken by Finch:

You are being watched. The government has a secret system...a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror but it sees everything: violent crimes involving ordinary people. The government considers these people "irrelevant". We don't. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us. But victim or perpetrator, if your number's up, we'll find you.
So the "irrelevant list" is comprised of everyday people who will be involved in violent crimes. And that's why Nathan's number appeared.

(And the way I understood it was that the machine had already set itself free.)

I wondered if it contacted Root because it wants to be set free....

I thought the machine had already set itself free. It had initiated the transfer request and was able to fake/copy/spoof all the necessary documents, etc. to make it seem like the orders were coming from the government.

I don't know why it would contact Root. I was also confused how they were able to get her institutionalized.

Like some others, I did find it strange that Fusco wasn't in the last 2 eps. Especially since they were the last 2 of the season. I found him conspicuously absent.

As I understood it, Finch set things up so that if the machine ever seemed in danger of being taken over by 'bad guys" it would set itself free automatically. I'm not sure why it is calling Root, unless it has something to do with that wire fiddling Finch was doing in the library. Or maybe the machine sees Root as a friend, since she wanted to set it free--so thinks she can be asked to do good things?

I was ok with Root being institutionalized. She was so grief-stricken at not finding the machine, that I think she is beyond help. Looking forward to next season. Glad there weren't any cliffhangers in the season finale.

and that's why I was confused - I thought it had set itself free, then it called Root - so was it telling her it was free? or was it telling her that it still needed to help to be set free.
