I'm again using this forum as an umbrella for series on PBS. If there should be another forum for it, mods please let me know. Meanwhile, here a little heads-up for anyone who might be interested.

Did anyone every watch the britcom To the Manor Born several years ago? It was another one I liked and it looks as if PBS is airing it starting tonight. They are also beginning to air some Doc Martin episodes, which I'll also be watching.

    Downton:

Poor Anna. And I understand why she chose not to tell Bates but I didn't like the way the guy got away with it, and the way it will cause future problems for Bates and Anna.
I hate, hate, hate Braithwaite. She needs to go away.
I'm ambivalent about Gregson (though it's nice that Edith has someone who likes her back) but I did like his getting one over on the card sharp.

I'm finding the storylines more interesting this season. Anna's tragic turn will have implications for a long time, and Edith's relationship is new territory that is evolving with the times. And it looks like she's finally not entering into something blind, lol. Last season, the plots sort of announced themselves ahead of time; "Robert is out of money...oh, Matthew might be coming into money!" There was no surprise in how that resolved itself. Even though seeing Edna back makes me want to hurt small animals, it's turning into an interesting character exploration for Tom, who is realizing just how far he can carry himself in high society. The new man hovering around Mary actually seems like a nice guy; hopefully that story will take its time unfolding, however it ends. Good episode.

    Downton Abbey
Haven't watched the third episode yet, but if this Barrow/Braithwaite vs Bates/Smith-Bates storyline continues I'm not sure if I can keep watching. I struggled with all the Bates/Smith-Bates woes last season. I'm ready for a break.

Also, I'm still dealing with the loss of Matthew and O'Brien. (I didn't know O'Brien was leaving the cast) The season is starting out so dark. I need something to brighten up soon or I may give it up.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

I think if Edna was more appealing in some way I'd be ok with her storyline with Tom, but she's such a schemer. Ugh, she sets me on edge.
I liked the guy with Mary last night. Don't think his fiancée will last...

    Downton

Just read about a traumatic event that happens in the next episode. I do NOT like it, and apparently even Lady Canarvon (who owns the mansion where the series is filmed) is among those outraged. Julian Fellowes is upsetting a lot of people with this storyline.

. The article I saw said it wasn't to her taste but she didn't speak against it -she said she hadn't seen the episode. Anyhow, I don't love the storyline but violence happens, even in the gilded world of Downton, and I guess I'm willing to see where it goes -and hopefully the guy ends up being punished. Interesting that the outcry over what happened with Tom (where Edna (supposedly - have to see next week) slept with him when he was arguably too drunk to give consent) hasn't been subject to much discussion except on one forum I visit. And someone help me -people were talking about Mary and Pamuk and about it being rape but that's not how I remember it?

No, the Mary-Pamuk affair was not rape -- Mary let his advances proceed, she kissed him back, and was not telling him to stop once it started. Plus, the man died while in the middle of things, so we'll never know just how far it actually went. Mary's shame could actually have been over nothing more than copping a feel.

The Tom/Edna thing happened so quickly at the end, I haven't thought about it as much as the other events. I'm hoping it doesn't become a drawn-out story this season, I would consider that a waste of precious episode time. Just get rid of her.

Thank you. That's how I remembered the Mary-Pamuk thing as well but I thought maybe I was misremembering.
And ditto on hoping they get rid of Edna soon.
