Neither did Scarlett O' Hara...and most people think her husband got the best line in that show. ;):whistle
Just got an e-mail from Amazon that my Downton Abbey DVDs have shipped. By Thursday night, I'll have watched the whole rest of the season - and hubby can have the big-screen TV for some stupid football game on Sunday. :-)
I have a different take on Mary. She's never been a favorite for me, but I was feeling some empathy for her as she dealt with her super immature husband who was refusing to open that letter. However, once again the woman is annoying me. I don't see her as holding her own, but being a stubborn, spoiled brat. When Sybil died, it was the second time that Edith has tried to start anew with her relationship with Mary, but Mary just dismisses it and says, she is just the way she is. She just lost her youngest sister, yet she still refuses to try start fresh with their relationship. IMO, that's just mean and ugly. I'm team Edith all the way.
I've been Team Edith the whole time. I think I relate to the "middle child" curse.
I have a habit of championing the underdog and that would have been Edith. And at times I did relate to her ... but didn't really root for her.
I do like that she seems to be coming into her own this season, so now I can possibly cheer her on.
I sort of relate more to Isobel who means well and has a good heart, but presents as a know it all. :rofl
Ironically enough, I'm the oldest of three girls, and yet I still can't relate to her. My parents would have beat the snot out of me if I had tried to act that nasty towards my family. And I am all for being true to yourself, but to cattily dismiss your sister's peace overture over your friggin' sister's deathbed is just disgusting. :barf It's especially insulting when Sybil was such a kind person who tried to help people.
I guess I have a different perspective about Mary. I think she's a realist. She knows that she and Edith will never be close, so she's not going to lie and utter a bunch of platitudes. That does nothing to honor Sybil's memory. I didn't think she was being catty. She's just Violet 40 years younger. She's just stating the truth of the situation, matter-of-factly. :shrug I still love her.
As much as I want to like her, I continue to be annoyed by Edith. I don't wish her ill, but I don't really root for her either.
