    Thanks for clarifying.

It totally sucks that when someone gets their big break something tragic like this occurs. I wonder how the producers will handle this. I know the second season due in Janurary 2011 is supposed to be a prequel to Spartacus, but will the producers try to replace Andy Whitfield for season 3?

No problem! I can't see them replacing him, but I also can't see them not continuing the series.

A month ago it was revealed that the Starz network along with producers of the hit show “Spartacus: Blood and Sand“ had plans to replace Andy Whitfield as the title character. Unfortunately, the actor has been fighting a battle with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and is currently undergoing serious treatment. The series has been postponed in the past to accommodate Whitfield’s condition but this time they were left with two options, cancel the show or recast the character. They went with the latter and now 3 new actors are on the short list to pick up where Whitfield left off.

According to Deadline, the three actors vying for the Spartacus role include Brit Aiden Turner (from “All My Children”), Canadian Stephen Amell, (Closing the Ring) and Australian Liam McIntyre (“The Pacific”). The casting notice for the replacement read: “a Caucasian male in his mid to late 30s to play the “smart, intense, passionate” title role. Interested parties must have an authentic British accent and be prepared to sign a three-year contract.”

McIntyre is the youngest out of this group clocking in at 28 years old, and looking like a mix between Stephen Moyer and Sam Worthington. We’re not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, but judging from his headshot (he’s the one in the blue shirt) he makes it work. Amell looks the most like Whitfield out of the trio thanks to his ridiculous cheekbones, while Turner is slightly older than the other two but closest to Whitfield’s age.

The jury’s still out on who will get chosen, but they’ve got a little time to ponder their final decision. Before the show returns they’ll have to work on the Spartacus prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which is slated to air in January.

What do you think of the 3 Spartacus candidates? Who should they choose?

I'll be watching tonight in Canada! I'm hoping it lives up to Season 1.

Spartacus Recasting: Who Should Play Slave Naevia? - Today's News: Our Take | TVGuide.com

Andy Whitfield isn't the only Spartacus: Blood and Sand actor to be replaced for the second season. Lesley-Ann Brandt is also leaving the Starz series, and her role will be recast, TV Guide.com has confirmed.

In the prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Brandt played body slave Naevia to Lucretia (Lucy Lawless), who eventually becomes the lover of Crixus the gladiator in the original series' first season. Brandt decided not to renew her contract to appear in the second season. The news was first reported by Deadline. She just began a recurring role on CSI: NY and recently appeared on an episode of Chuck.

It's not clear whether or not Starz will be looking for an actress with similar features and coloring as Brandt for a replacement. A rep for the network confirmed that casting is wide open to find "the best people for each role" and not based on a specific look. The series doesn't always stick to historical accuracy in its casting of the supporting roles. The role of Oenomaus (Peter Mensah) is reimagined as an African slave, but the original gladiator who had teamed up with Spartacus was from Gaul, a region of Europe during the Roman era.

Whitfield had to drop out of Spartacus to battle non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and Liam McIntyre stepped into his sandals for the second season, which will begin production soon.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena airs Fridays at 10/9c on Starz. The six-part prequel will conclude on Friday, Feb. 25.

Who would you like to see as Naevia? Will you miss Brandt?
Oh, no. I was so into the love story between Crixtus and Naevia.
