Tom Brokaw's 1968

Anyone see this the other night?

Very interesting and thought provoking show. My brother was in college in 1968 and he said that Brokaw really caught the feeling of what that year was all about.

I don't know if it will be re-run, but if so, it's worth a watch.

He also has a book out about the same subject.

He is doing to the Boomer Generation what he did to their parents in "The Greatest Generation".

And for the most part, he treats the Boomers very well. They brought about a huge change in this country and 1968 seemed to be the pivatol year for that change.

Makes you wonder also what our country would have been like had Robert Kennedy not been killed and elected president.

Thoughts????

Oh, I had meant to catch this when I first heard about it... but par for the course, I forgot about it. *sigh*

I was born in 1968 so it would have been interesting to watch a documentary about things going on at that time.

I was just literally talking about this show about 20 minutes ago. We were talking about next year's elections and if any riots would break out. I brought up the DNC riots in Chicago and the program.

Tom Brokaw does great work. I've enjoyed his books as well.

1968 is on my Christmas list. I own his other books.

I have vague memories of the Dem. convention in 68. I was really, really, really sick and my parents had made me a bed on the sofa and I can recall drifting in and out of sleep and seeing the convention on tv and my parents on the edge of their seats during the whole thing.

Honestly, this country is too apathetic to riot at the upcoming conventions. Besides, the nominee is already decided by that point today.

I thought it was really interesting that Kennedy did NOT get into the race until after the New Hampshire primaries. Today that would be considered political suicide.

I also thought it was interesting (and I can't remember who this was, maybe Springsteen) that said during the show that our country is not nearly as invested in the war today because there is no draft today like there was in 1968.

A funny side note: during one segment (from present time), Brokaw is standing in front of a store in the Haight and I turned to my husband and said: "THAT is the store I bought your Bob Marley shirt in that you told someone you didn't know where it came from. It came from THERE!"

Thanks for the info about the show tonight, mrd!

about your side note. I do that same thing all of the time during movies about NYC. I point and say "I used to do X there!" and "I was standing right about there for NYE", etc. And I got REALLLLLLLY angry when watching Meet The Parents and they tried to pass the Westchester Airport off as LaGuardia! That's the airport that I used to fly in and out of all of the time as my office was in Purchase and I'd fly back and forth to Michigan from and to work. "That's MY airport!" I yelled at the screen in a huff!

I'm fortunate that I got to travel quite a bit when I was younger. My family now HATES for me to say: "I've been there and it was............"

Now they say back to me: "we KNOW already".

The worst is ANYTHING that mentions or shows Mt. St. Helen's because it erupted on my 18th birthday and so anytime its mentioned, I would say: "hey, you know that erupted on my 18th birthday" Well now its gotten to be a joke for me to say it and EVERYONE I know is tired of it. I got to go there almost 2 years ago and I sent my family a post card showing the eruption and I wrote on the back: "you know, this erupted on my 18th birthday" and I paid the girl at the gift shop to mail it for me from the nearest post office. Well my family did NOT think it was funny. I myself, thought it was hilarious!

Re: Tom Brokaw's 1968

I'm so glad to be reminded about this tonight. I really wanted to see it, then forgot it was on last night, so I'm thrilled I get a second chance. I'm not about to say how old I was in 1968, so let's just say I was old enough to remember all the turmoil vividly.

I missed it. I graduated from high school in '68. It's on again at midnight but I don't think I'll be up then.

It's bound to play again, so tape it.

The history channel is notorious for repeating stuff and things like 1968 they play over and over again.
