I didn't like the new opening, it was very weird.

It was good, but not nearly as good as what we were seeing at the end of last season. I was also confused at the end with Bill being handed the white cowboy hat. Was it a good or bad thing? All his wives were making kind of horrified faces, so I wasn't sure. Anyone have any insight?

    It was Roman's hat.

I'm glad I didn't stay up until after midnight to watch this last night. I'll catch it when it airs again this week during the early evening.

Thanks! That explains the horrified looks on his wives faces.

YES, I thought the whole premier was kind of odd. It's supposedly only been 6 weeks since Roman "disappeared" but it seems like so much had changed. And where were the rest of the kids the whole episode?

I think I was expecting more too!! But I did like it and I am glad it is back on!! Lois buying and selling birds...? That room must smell AWFUL. Ben and his band...? Kenny Rogers was suppose to perform...? Roman in the freezer...? BACON IN THE FREEZER....GET ME THE BACON!!! Lois and Frank fighting at THEIR age...? Lois' hair has grown and Frank has put on the pounds. Alby and his binoculars and his fling. I guess they did well opening night at the casino.
Well I liked the old opening, "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys.

Yes I liked the old opening MUCH better. It made sense for the subject of the series. Anyone care to explain if there is a point to the new opening?

    Re: Big Love on HBO

I was pretty underwhelmed by the season premiere as well. It was very odd to not see Joey after his killing Roman last season, and all that business with the casino opening and the son's band, etc. was kind of annoying. As far as the opening is concerned: I can't find the link now, but earlier I read that the falling through darkness represents Barb's excommunication from the Mormon church. I'll see if I can find the article...

    Okay, here we go:

"This new season also introduced a new opening sequence. Instead of Bill and his three wives ice-skating and eating dinner in the celestial kingdom, they are now floating and falling through blackness, grasping for one another. The significance of this has to do with the Mormon belief of outer darkness, which is essentially their version of hell. Only those who have committed blasphemy—an unpardonable sin—will be cast into the outer darkness, and they'll have to remain there for eternity because they won't be receiving an invitation into the kingdom of glory after Judgment Day. Barb was super afraid and upset that the LDS basically sentenced her to outer darkness after they excommunicated her, which is one of the reasons why Bill decided to start his own church. The new opening sequence suggests that the Henricksons are in outer darkness, but they're there together, and being together in the afterlife was their idea of heaven anyway. "

    Re: Big Love on HBO

Of course the show gets a lot of publicity here in Utah.... At least one of the local radio stations had a local tv critic on to discuss the show in particular (and others, in general). The critic said (and I wish I could remember how many episodes he has seen already) the show will be more "on the mark" as far as following the church and it's teachings, etc., and less about the soap opera angle. He compared the first episode to an episode of "Lost" or even "Twin Peaks". In his opinion, the show will get better as time goes, and the story line will be less twisted and easier to follow. I don't know how the "following the teachings of the church" aspect will play out here....it does tend to create controversy.

At the end of his review, he added, "in the final scene of the first episode, we find out Bobby is not dead, but is actually in the shower....."

What was the deal with Margene (sp?) pointing out that Nikki's ex husband had no fingernails? I feel like we didn't get a reason why this seemed like such a big deal.
