However, I do agree with you about how the character of "Monica" seems to be used, this season. In my opinion, "Monica" is not "Toni". And, to me, "Toni" is irreplaceable, in regards to the dynamic of the "Girlfriends. She is who she is. Fans/long-time viewers of this show KNOW this, and, as such, there's a BIG HOLE left that (reportedly) won't be replaced by the real thing or, at least, by "Monica". Cat

| Well, Tonight's episode was pretty interesting, all about Toni...without actually showing her, lol! I've missed all but a few episodes, the show isn't the same without Toni and being on CW seems to have watered it down even more. Can someone please tell me how they handled her absence? Another thing that I've noticed about CW is that they put EVERY SINGLE "Black" show on Monday Night, rather than simply mixing them in with the rest of their lineup. Very distasteful. Also, STILL annoyed about H&H being cancelled. |

Otherwise, I, too, don't think "Girlfriends" is quite the same without Toni. However, as I have watched many episodes this season, I have found a few highlights and/or (otherwise) interesting moments. First of all, I like the way that Maya, Darnell, and Jabari - individually and collectively - have been "fleshed out" in their storylines, as their respective characters' and family's stories have evolved, so far this season. Hey, Maya & Darnell finally bought a house, and now their place is another main hang-out spot, as opposed to Joan's, which was the only one, as was previously the case. And, Maya & Darnell are at a new level in their relationship, Jabari is a teenager, etc. And, speaking of Joan, it seems as if she may have finally found her man, i.e., the guy that she first met when she went to New Orleans to work on rebuilding homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, even after that dicey, rocky incident on their first date, when both of them were back in L.A. So, there may be some growth/evolution, on her part, too. And, the show is exploring more about Lynn and her aspirations for a music career. She got a shot with Big Boi (from Outkast) this season. Don't remember how that turned out, but it may be promising... Then, there's William, who is now back together and engaged to Monica. In my opinion, the PTB behind this show brought Monica back, as something of the "bitch on wheels" factor, in Toni's absence. Or, maybe, too, they brought her back to keep William's storyline alive...I dunno. But, one interesting twist is how Joan has been thrown together with Monica, to the point where Monica has started thinking that/acting like Joan is close enough to her, as a friend, to be her bridesmaid. But, even more drama has been added, due to William's fits of "cold feet" about ultimately getting married to Monica, as well as Monica's picking up on said "vibes" from him. In terms of pure comedy, though, I must admit that, earlier this season, there was an episode where both William and Monica had me dyin' laughin'. As I recall, it was an ep where, first of all, Monica was trying to figure out how to let loose with William, and have the same kind of fun that he often had with Joan, when the two were best buddies. At this point, I think that Monica was trying to hold on to William, using whatever she gathered from what she knew about his relationship with Joan. Anyway, there was a scene where, at some point, the gang came to a club to see/hear Lynn perform, and they found out that it was a karaoke show. One thing led to another, and, finally, I/we (who watched that ep) eventually saw William and Monica, on stage, doing a karaoke performance to "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" (from the movie, "Dirty Dancing." I howled with laughter, watching these two, and knowing their respective characters... ... You have to see it yourself (yourselves), and get the meaning of what's going on, to appreciate it ...By the way, I read somewhere, recently, that Mara Brock Akil, creator of this show, is writing "Girlfriends", this season, as if it's the last go-around for the series. All of the stuff that I mentioned (above) happened in the eps that I saw this season, from start to the finish of the Christmas break. Who knows WHAT might happen in the "second half" of the latest new episodes this year, OK? As such, I would say, "watch and see", because I think that this show might still have "legs". So, watch, wait and see what's happening now, and check out what goes on, in the future. "Girlfriends" msy not be the same TV show, especially since "Toni" left. But, I don't think that it totally sucks now, either. I would just like to wait and see how the rest of this season pans out, and, then, what might be in store, beyond that point. Cat

| Catwoman, good synopsis of the season so far. I have to say though, I do not like the new Jabari. He just doesn't vibe well with me. Why did they replace him?

!! And, for the first time, I saw some very strong chemistry between the characters of William and Monica (and the actors who portray them). Now, if "Girlfriends" could just hang in there, and provide more fine comedy like that, along with some decent, overall "dramedy," once the series returns from the holiday/midseason hiatus, then I would be a happy (happier) camper.cat

| Re: Girlfriends Do you mean last episode as in the series finale? God I sure hope not. Anyway, I just happened to tune in towards the end of the show last night (forgot about it and was watching something else) to catch the proposal and couldn't help thinking how phony it was that Toni wasn't there to share in Joan's happy moment. Everybody else under the sun was there except for Toni. Hell, for that matter they could have used a different actress to play the part if they needed to. |
