Excepts from PSEUDOSCIENCE pseudo means FAKE)Sometimes people refer to religion as pseudo-science. Ironically, this kind of statement is itself pseudo-science. Perhaps the term "pseudo-science" applies to some religions. But the Mormon church never claimed to be a science, and so is properly a non-science and not pseudo-science. In contrast, many unscientific statements against the church do pretend to be science. Ironically, they become the very thing they pretend to despise.Pseudo-Science Anything that claims to be science, but is not. Pseudoscience does not progress. There are fads, and a pseudoscientist may switch from one fad to another (from ghosts to ESP research, from flying saucers to psychic studies, from ESP research to looking for Bigfoot). But within a given topic, no progress is made. Little or no new information or uncovered. New theories are seldom proposed, and old concepts are rarely modified or discarded in light of new "discoveries," since pseudoscience rarely makes new "discoveries." The older the idea, the more respect it receives. No natural phenomena or processes previously unknown to science have ever been discovered by pseudoscientists. Indeed, pseudoscientists almost invariably deal with phenomena well known to scientists, but little known to the general public -- so that the public will swallow whatever the pseudoscientist wants to claim. Examples include firewalking and "Kirlian" photography. No physical phenomena or processes are ever found or studied. No progress is made; nothing concrete is learned. Convinces by appeal to faith and belief. Pseudoscience has a strong quasi-religious element: it tries to convert, not to convince. You are to believe in spite of the facts, not because of them. The original idea is never abandoned, whatever the evidence.

Has anybody else read some of Dean Koontz' novels dealing with genetic engineering and some of the monsters that he came up with? That's what the possible monsters on the island kind of remind me of. He also used Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers as pets/heroes in several of his books. Vincent (the dog ) brought that to mind.

Maybe there were French scientists who made a machine that can make people's thoughts a reality. Only, it has severe limitations (or malfunctions) and works better for the younger or purer of heart. That might be streching the psuedo-science angle, but who knows how much the producers are stretching this term.

| ok...I cannot make out the words on the polar bear page, but the bottom page is readable: Man with black word cloud(looks like a brain): My plan is to die. Because of Gunther and you all, I am plagued with diseases. But I shall share my pain. Man in the middle with what look slike a metal helmet: What are your plans now? What would it bother you if you told us? After all, we are your puppets. Man in green cape: We understand how you feel. What we did half a century ago was wrong, and what has been done to you since then is far from forgivable. But if someone should pay for that.... | |

Amazing timing Burntcrow! I was just wishing I could see that comic book picture to judge how much the polar bear was being emphasized and fit the scene where it was shot by Sawyer. IMHO, it's too similar to merely be a coincidence. The bear appears to be "attack mode" which is the only way the polar bear on the island was seen. You would normally expect to see a bear unaware, then startled by someone and then attack (and perhaps then only if it had cubs). Here we saw the bear in attack mode only just like the comic book. Plus, how many comic books have we seen which have a polar bear??? It must be a clue about the psuedo-science on this island. Thanks a bunch for finding this and posting it.

No matter what the producers say, I still think that something happens with the wishes of those on the island (Locke: "Ooooh! I sure do wish I could talk again. That would sure be swell. If I could also see some Austrailan animals, that'd be great!" Walt: "I wish it would stop raining so Dad could find my dog. Golly, would you look at that. No more rain!") At first I thought it had to do with the fears because of the polar bear, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that maybe Walt wished that there was a bear like in the comic book. I dunno.
