It was a good episode, but a little overhyped IMO. I only teared up when the door opened and Jack came walking out with the dog. I'm glad Rebecca addressed the "candy bar" scene. I mean, the Dr just told her Jack was dead and she takes a bite of her candy bar, who does that? So weird.

I found the candy bar thing totally relatable. After my Dad died I went on autopilot and to me that is what she did. Mandy Moore was amazing tonight.

I didn't actually cry or anything. I think they built it up SO MUCH over the last, what, 18 months, that there was no way they could have lived up to all that hype. I guessed how Jack was going to die before it happened based on what Milo said in an interview about how it would happen. I knew it would be a heart attack.

Did they need to make me dislike Kate even more than I already do?

Mandy Moore did a nice job, but I wouldn't throw at Emmy at that. WAY better performances on TV this year. I like her, but yeah, that's not Emmy material.

As usual, I enjoyed Randall's storyline more than the others. It was fun to see adult Tess as a social worker (?). Very sweet. I wonder if Deja is back for good or just there for a short time.

I thought the episode was nicely done, but I expected a lot more after so much fanfare.

    Whew! Solid episode!

Older Tess...my gosh, this show is great at casting people! Younger Tess looks jus like her!!! Great to know Randall gets to see his number 1 grow up!

Line of the night: He ain't giggling no more!

I found it unrealistic that Jack was able to make it down the stairs, much less grab that stuff, but eh, it s a TV show so I won't over think it too much.

I liked Kevin finally talking to Jack & his moment with his mom. Randall's speech about the lizard/Jack was heartbreaking. I can see why Kate blames herself. Not gonna lie, for a second, I was like DO YOU WANT THE DOG OR YOUR DAD GIRL?! But she was young and obviously loved her pet. Jack could've not gone back in...he knew the risks...so at the end of the day, it's not her fault. Just an awful accident.

    I'm excited for Tuesday's episode!!!

He might've gotten out faster if he had just grabbed the dog, but he also collected the photos and Kate's video, which probably took a lot more time. I'm glad they didn't actually show Jack dying, while doing a good job of increasing the tension by having Rebecca doing mundane things like making the phone calls and messing with the vending machine, all the while with her back to the emergency that was going on a short distance away (even though in real life, I think much of that would have been audible).

Please make Deja go away and have Randall and Beth foster and adopt a little boy! Randall would be so cute with a son, and emotionally it would be healing because he was a boy/man who only had his fathers for such a short time.

    Re: This Is Us

I hope this episode serves as a warning that human lives are more important than possessions and that every family should have a fire plan. That was the most messed up fire evacuation I've ever seen! Why did they all go to the one room before getting out of the house?? If they had simply gotten out and all met up in one spot, they would have been out sooner. And even if Jack had gone back for the dog and their possessions he would have been back out sooner.

I think in reality the toxic fumes from the fire would have knocked the family out because the fire was already going really well before they even became aware of it.

It's sad to say but they probably should have left to dog to find its own way out or be rescued by fire fighters rather than risking their own lives to go back for it. If the fire was harmful enough to kill Jack, I wonder if the dog died, too?

I was also disappointed to see Deja back. I would rather have Randall get a son. He's right that there are too many girls in his household.

I actually liked Rebecca for a change after this episode and have a healthy amount of respect for her. It must have taken incredible strength to deal with losing her husband plus the prospect of raising three children on her own. In previous episodes she's always been such a complainer but she learned to shoulder the burden without a peep to give her kids more stability when they needed it after losing their father.

    Re: This Is Us

Jack could never ever disappoint his Katie girl and it cost him his life. He knew how much her dog meant to her and he had to go back in and rescue him. I have to hand wave him not only saving Louie but rummaging through the raging fire to collect all the family's beloved possessions. It's no wonder Rebecca never takes off that necklace! I think Mandy did a very good job throughout the episode, especially in the moments right after hearing Jack has died. I so want to like adult Kate but I just can't. I understand why she blames herself for her dad's death. If she hadn't screamed out about the dog, maybe Jack would not have gone back in to get him. I know she was just 17 and not fully an adult but it's got to eat at her. No wonder she is such a mess. But after 20 years she needs to get some professional help and let it go. I liked the moments of levity...Mr. McGiggles is no longer giggling and Kevin saying he wasn't sure he was even at the right tree. Were some of Jack's ashes scattered under a tree? Kate has the urn with his ashes so I was confused about that. Some things also you just have to take with a grain of salt. For example: Kevin is at the tree talking with Rebecca who is watching the Superbowl. The game starts around 6 pm in Winter. In NJ it would be dark out by then and Kevin is sitting outside in the sunshine in daylight with a light jacket on. Also, the Pearsons lived in Pittsburgh. Rebecca now lives in NJ. I am assuming she does not live that far from Randall, who lives in northern NJ, so as to commute to NYC. So, Kevin did all of that driving in just a day? I did like Rebecca telling Kevin that Jack sent him to her this year. That was an AWW moment. I do hope they will have a much better relationship going forward. I was totally fooled by that misdirect. I thought for sure that cute little boy was going to become Beth and Randall's new foster child. And, I must be the only one here who did not 'get' that that was adult Tess. I was staring at the screen saying why is Randall so old here? I don't know if they said something that let us know that the social worker was adult Tess but I guess I missed it. The episode was a lot to process. I am going to have to go back and watch it at least one more time. But a big from me for this episode.

    Re: This Is Us

People who are experiencing shock do odd things. I think anyone whose experienced the death of a loved one, even a pet, will tell you they were functioning in a state of despair. The candy bar thing perfectly illustrated that. For those of us who've lived through deaths of people we love deeply, it's common to behave oddly. You are so lost. So shocked(even if you knew it was coming). You are, Coping skills can be messy and detrimental. I believe lots of people can relate to Kate. And the way she copes.
I also think Jack saving the dog wasn't about anything else other than that's what some people do, they don't think of a pet as disposable. It played to his characters moral compass. Yes, saving the dog cost him his life-but it might have gone the other way. You can't blame Kate, she's a kid who probably believed her Dad was superman.
She's also the one not only carrying her own guilt, but she is carrying everyone else's pain, under the belief she caused their Dads death over a stupid dog.
Except, if you've ever loved a pet they are family. Their lives are not more disposable. Think of all the people, who during Hurricane Katrina, refused to be evacuated from their roofs because they would be forced to leave behind their pets. Some states passed laws after that which created shelter areas for pet owners

No, pets are not disposable. But in hindsight wouldn't Kate rather have her dad alive? Jack has been painted as a saint, a superhero, so maybe he would have gone back to save Louie anyway. IDK

Just watched the last segment on NBC and I feel like such a doofus. I was so intent on watching that foster child with his new parents who were NOT Beth and Randall that I totally missed the assistant telling adult Tess her dad was here and Randall calling his daughter "Tess."
