| Article and image from Newzcentral.com ![]() Jim Marvin/The Advance NASHVILLE BOUND -- LHS graduate Brandon Silveira is headed for competition in the series Nashville Star in Nashville beginning March 8. He won the right to perform after competitions in Fresno and Los Angeles. LEMOORE--His combination of country and punk wowed the judges at local and regional competitions so Lemoore native Brandon Silveira is heading for Nashville and the reality TV series Nashville Star. "It's like American Idol, only it involves country music," explained Silveira who began the Nashville Star competition in Fresno against 300 contestants. "I won the Fresno competition and then went to Los Angeles for regional competition," said Silveira. Silveira said that he didn't finish #1 in L.A. but was selected to be among the 12 finalists who will appear on USA TV beginning on March 8 at 9 p.m. with a recorded broadcast. According to Silveira, Nashville Star competition took part in 48 cities across the country. The final 12 will perform for audience votes every Saturday beginning with the first live broadcast on March 15. "The series is a lot like American Idol in that people can phone in their vote for their favorite singer," Silveira said. But it is also different from American Idol. "All the contestants, six men and six women, will be housed in a large home in Nashville and cameras will record our daily lives as well as our stage performances," said Silveira. Silveira and the rest of the finalists have also cut a CD which will be on sale beginning the first week of March. On that CD Silveira sings Buck Owens' "Act Naturally." "I love country," said the spiked-haired young man. "It's in my roots. I grew up listening to Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Alan Jackson and of course Hank Williams Sr." So far in competition Silveira has sung Hank Williams' "Love Sick Blues," and Merle Haggard's "Bottle Let Me Down This Time." As part of the competition he also had to perform a song he composed. He has co-written two songs, "Dusty Old Road," and "Country's Being Wronged." Once selected as a finalist he was flown to Nashville. "That was a lot of fun," he said of his first Nashville trip. "We (the finalists) worked long hours, 6 a.m. - 8 p.m., but we enjoyed it." Silveira says that he has made great friends through his work with the finalists and the people in charge of the series. Plus he got to meet Wynonna Judd. Silveira gives a lot of the credit for his success to his friend Curtis Marsh of Hanford. Marsh accompanied him on the guitar when he competed at the local and regional competitions and co-wrote the original songs Silveira used as his own compositions during competition and wrote the song "Fine Woman" which Silveira may use in competition. "Curtis is a well-known local band member," said Silveira. "He used to play with the band Second String. It was Curtis who convinced me to try out for Nashville Star." Silveira, the son of Leland and Margie Silveira of Lemoore, attended local schools, graduating from MIQ and with the LHS Class of 1997. This year he completed his studies in crop science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and when he isn't performing he works with his father in a custom agricultural spraying business in the Lemoore area. | I liked Brandon a lot. His facial expressions, hair, and body movements are an interesting flip side to his old school country sound. He is charismatic and has a great sense of humor on and off stage.

| Posted on Thu, Mar. 13, 2003 'Nashville Star' competitors have local ties Network show is country-western version of 'American Idol' Grant Shellen The Tribune ...After graduating from Cal Poly's crop science program in December 2001, Silveira went home to Hanford to run an agriculture and pest control business and farm with his father. When his friend and songwriting partner, Curtis Marsh, told him about "Nashville Star," Silveira said he wasn't too excited about it. "I told him, 'No, I'm not gonna do it,'" he said. But Marsh wore him down, and Silveira finished first in a field of almost 300 competitors in a radio-station-sponsored contest in Fresno, earning a spot at the regional competition in Los Angeles. Silveira said he stood out from others because of his spiky hair and nontraditional image. The 24-year-old farmer said he had never performed before a large audience until the "Nashville Star" tryouts. It was only a few months before he heard about the competition that Silveira said he and Marsh (formerly in a punk band) began writing and practicing country songs. "(Marsh) wrote a country song that was really good," he said. "We sat down and started messing around, and now here we are moving to Nashville."... Click here to read the full article. | |

| Wow, he's got a really great sound. I was a little annoyed by the constant eye-rolling during his song, though.
