The song you wish YOU'D written

This week's American Idol got me thinking about what song I wish I'd written. I didn't have to think long. There are SO MANY songs I love, but the lyrics to "Ghost" by the Indigo Girls always gets me.

    Ghost

There's a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to from our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever of the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons shadowing my dreams

The Mississippi's mighty, but it starts in Minnesota
At a place where you can walk across with five steps down
And that's just how you started like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me and I start to drown

There's not enough room in this world for my pain
Signals crossed and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits I need you the most
I'm in love with your ghost
I'm in love with your ghost

Dark and dangerous like a secret it gets whispered in a hush (don't tell a soul)
And when I wake the things I dreamt about you last night make me blush (don't
    tell a soul)
When you kiss me like a lover and you sting me like a viper
I go follow to the river play your memory like the piper

And I feel it like a sickness how this love is killing me
But I would walk into the fingers of your fire willingly
Dance the edge of sanity I've never been this close
    In love with your ghost
    oooooh-oooooooh-ooooooh-oooooooooh
    oooooh-oooooooh-ooooooh-oooooooooh

Unknowing captor you'll never know how much you
Pierce my spirit but I can't touch you
Can you hear it a cry to be free
Oh I'm forever under lock and key
    As you pass through me

Now I see your face before me I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island as the sand beneath me slips
I burn up in your presence and I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles with you always at my heels

This bitter pill to swallow is the silence that I keep
It poisons me I can't swim free the river is too deep
Though I'm baptized by your touch I am no worse at most
    In love with your ghost

    Amy:
    In love with your ghost
    In love with your ghost
    Emily:
    You are shadowing my dreams
This song has always affected me, because it reminds me of someone I loved many years ago. It sums up everything I feel about him.

So, what song do you wish YOU'D written?

I have wished to have written certain songs, but my mind runs in a more avaricious vein. If I had written Sometimes When we Touch, Feelings, or Lady in Red, I wouldn't be trapped in a cubicle right now. I may not be wealthy, but I could probably afford to retire early.

I wish I'd written any number of Beatles songs, but the one that especially comes to mind is "A Day in the Life." Oh, to be born with the talents of Lennon AND McCartney...

Re: The song you wish YOU'D written

For me, while it would be nice to have written a song that made a ton of money, it's more about hearing a song that just knocks me over with the lyrics and it's SO good that I think "Man, I wish I'd written that!"

ITA, lizardcat - it's about having the talent!

Gosh... there are so many songs I wish I had written. I'm sure to some the songs I list or think of will or might annoy, but still true. I of course wish I had written "Time of your life" from dirty dancing, to this day, its still my favorite song. Janet Jackson's "Miss you much" what a great song. "Take my breath away" From Top Gun. "True Blue" by Madonna. Or even "Like a prayer" by Madonna. "Faith" and "Father Figure" by George Michael are classics, I wish I could lay claim to.

This song always reminds me of someone, too. My friend's daughter, Kelley, who introduced me to IG CD's in the 90's. This song is so poigant, so anguished it has always moved me.

Here's another old one I never tire of listening to, especially if I am feeling a bit sad or defeated. And, yes, I do wish I wrote it. It's simple and powerful.

    Walls - Tom Petty

    Some days are diamonds
    Some days are rocks
    Some doors are open
    Some roads are blocked

    Sundowns are golden
    Then fade away
And if I never do nothing
I'll get you back some day

Cause you got a heart so big
    It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
    Even walls fall down

    And all around your island
    There's a barricade
    It holds out the danger
    It keeps in the pain

    Sometimes you're happy
    Sometimes you cry
    Half of me is ocean
    Half of me is sky

But you got a heart so big
    It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
    Even walls fall down

    And some things are over
    Some things go on
And part of me you carry
    Part of me is gone

But you got a heart so big
    It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
    Even walls fall down

Baby you got a heart so big
    It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
    Even walls fall down
    They fall down

(To listen: Walls by Tom Petty w/ lyrics - YouTube )
