2007 MTV Video Music Awards (Nominations/Show Discussion)

    Timberlake leads MTV awards race
    Wednesday, 8 August 2007

Beyonce and Justin Timberlake have each received seven nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards, including best female and male artist of the year.
Rapper Kanye West and R&B star Rihanna are shortlisted in five categories.

The UK's Lily Allen, whose US work visa was cancelled by officials on Sunday, will go head to head with Amy Winehouse in the best newcomer category.

Winehouse, the Foo Fighters and Rihanna are due to perform at the ceremony, to be held in Las Vegas on 9 September.

Last year Colombian singer Shakira had seven nominations but won just one award.

    'Monster single'

The event, held in New York, saw newcomers US rock band Panic! at the Disco beat top-selling artists to win the coveted video of the year with their song I Write Sins Not Tragedies.

This year, Beyonce's Irreplaceable is up for video of the year alongside Timberlake's What Goes Around ... Comes Around, which featured actress Scarlett Johansson.

Other nominees for the event's main award include Amy Winehouse's Rehab, Kanye West's Stronger and Rihanna's Umbrella.

Umbrella, which topped the UK chart for 10 straight weeks, is also up for "monster single of the year".

Despite her visa difficulties, Allen was able to attend Tuesday's nominations announcement at the Palms Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas.

In a statement, the singer said she was "trying everything I can to sort this out" and that she intended to honour US touring commitments in September.

As I said in Carries thread, she joins only Johnny Cash & Shania Twain as Country artist nominees. Not to bad a company to keep.

Well as much as they're now promoting Britney's performance, they better hope and pray that she doesn't flake out and not do it. That she rocks it and not falls flat (though I think this one would still garner big ratings).

I must admit, I may not watch the VMAs but I will probably tune in for her performance.

Goodness gracious! One minute in and she totally sucked! Im not surprised but she was horrible. She looked as if she wasn't even trying and on top of that she was lip-syncing.

WOW. That was the worst Britney performance in history.

FYI, she has ALWAYS lipsynched. But never that bad!

The dancing was horrendous as well, and she used to be a wonderful dancer.

Ugh, that was just terrible. Awful. She is totally done I hope.

Re: 2007 MTV Video Music Awards (Nominations)

Brit Brit always lipsynched but now she's so wasted she can't even fake it all that well...

I didn't bother with the VMAs, but my local news just showed it. I got a little barf in my mouth watching it. On top of the bad synching, she just plain doesn't have the body anymore to prance around 95% naked. Actually, it was more of a drugged lumber than a prance from what I saw. Her eyes looked completely dead, and her body seemed to move like a Mack truck compared to the stuff she was able to do a mere few years ago. I mean even if she could never sing worth @^#$ without being prerecorded she DID used to be able to dance.

I hope the "Britney Spears Just Won't Go Away" topic becomes irrelevant soon. We can replace it with a "Amy Winehouse Just Can't Keep Sober" topic instead... (hey, at least Winehouse can actually sing live...)

Re: 2007 MTV Video Music Awards (Nominations)

Heh... I'm glad I missed it, apparently.

There are already reports out there about it... love the opening.

LAS VEGAS - Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing.

An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards -- but for all the wrong reasons. Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared -- much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles.

She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

    Some comeback.

Re: 2007 MTV Video Music Awards (Nominations)

Did it never even occur to this brain dead drugged out freak to perform dressed, with no dancing and sing in front of a mike?

No wait. That would require her actually SINGING. Which we all know she actually CAN'T.

The ONE thing she could do, arguably better than almost anyone else--dance around a stage sexily--is gone now too.

    Career over. NEXT!

(I really keep hoping that if enough of these bad dancey-lipsynchy performances happen that the industry as a whole will turn on those kinds of performers and muster in a new age of people actually performing live. You know. Standing still in front a REAL microphone with a band instead of freaking dancers. But this is probably a vain hope...)
