James Brown's Body Has Not Been Buried

    Tue Jan 09,10:35 PM ET

The body of soul singer James Brown has yet to be buried as attorneys and his children work to settle issues surrounding his estate, including where he will be laid to rest.

For now, his body lies in a sealed casket in his home on Beech Island, said Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Ga., which handled the services.

Brown died of heart failure Dec. 25 at age 73. His will has yet to be filed, said Buddy Dallas, an attorney for the singer.

The room where Brown's body lies is being kept at a controlled temperature, and security guards keep watch, Reid said.

The funeral home delivered Brown's body after services Dec. 30, Reid said.

Brown's home has been locked since hours after his death to protect his memorabilia, furnishing, clothes and other personal items, Dallas said.

"Just imagine what would have happened," Dallas said. "Items of James Brown would have left there like items off the shelves of Macy's in an after-Christmas sale."

The trustees for his will, along with Brown's children, will determine the burial site, Dallas said.

Tomi Rae Hynie, Brown's partner, said shortly after his death that she encountered locked gates as she tried to get into the home she says she shared with the singer and their 5-year-old son.

She wouldn't discuss the incident Tuesday, but her lawyer said Hynie should be granted access to the home, although he would not talk about whether Hynie might take legal action.

"The hope is that all parties can sit down and figure out what the problem is and what the challenges are," attorney Thornton Morris said. "And once we figure out what the challenges are we'll see if we can't resolve something that's a win for everybody."

Meanwhile, a woman who claims Brown raped her nearly 20 years ago said Tuesday she will continue her lawsuit.

Jacque Hollander has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear her sexual harassment suit, which a lower court ruled last year she had waited too long to file. A Supreme Court decision on whether to hear the case is pending.

She argues that the two-year statute of limitations in such cases does not provide equal protection to women.

"This has been a long road that ended tragically Christmas morning," Hollander said in a phone interview with the Associated Press.

"As a rape victim, I will never get to face him in court, and it hurts," she said. "But we are moving forward. We filed against his organization, as well as him. So now his organization stands in front of him."

In her lawsuit, Hollander said Brown raped her at gunpoint in 1988 while she was his publicist. She seeks $106 million in damages.

A federal appeals court tossed out Hollander's lawsuit in August.

"There was nothing to it 20 years ago and nothing to it 20 years later," Dallas said.

    Finally!

James Brown's burial expected in next few days

Adult children say singer's estate mismanaged

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- The six adult children of singer James Brown have agreed with his partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, on where the entertainer will be buried, an attorney for the woman said Tuesday.

Robert Rosen said the resting place is being kept confidential at the request of Brown's children. He said the burial may take place in the "next few days."

Brown died Christmas Day at age 73. His body is in a confidential location, said Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home, which handled Brown's funeral.

He said he checked on Brown on Tuesday, opening the gold casket to view the body.

"I do that constantly," Reid said. "That's the only way I can actually check him ... go in, open the casket and close it. And he's fine."

Meanwhile, a judge in a ruling made public Tuesday said the trustees accused of mismanaging Brown's estate will keep handling his property and trust, but a special administrator will oversee their work.

The singer's six adult children claim the estate has been mismanaged, saying in court papers that some of Brown's assets were in danger of being "lost or dissipated or stolen.

The trust is said to contain most of Brown's primary assets, including music rights and his home, and is separate from Brown's will filed last week. The will called for personal possessions such as clothes, jewelry, boats and automobiles to be divided among the children.

Rosen said he and his client were pleased with the appointment.

Brown's attorney, trustee Buddy Dallas, said he was pleased and vindicated.

But it likely will not be the last hearing over the singer's estate.

"As long as there's a lawyer who can earn a fee, this will go on," Dallas said.

Attorneys for Brown's children did not immediately returns calls for comment Tuesday.

After 75 days, James Brown was finally laid to rest, at least temporarily. Even ANS's burial didn't take this long!!!

Body will be moved to a public mausoleum that is being built
Friend: "Mr. Brown's not deserving of anyone's backyard"

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- James Brown's body was placed in a crypt Saturday at the Beech Island home of one of the soul singer's daughters, a spokeswoman for the Rev. Al Sharpton said.

Sharpton presided over the private ceremony held for family and a few friends at the home of Deanna Brown Thomas, Rachel Noerdlinger said.

Also at the service were Brown's partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, and the couple's young son, said her spokesman, Michael Nason said.

The service took place more than two months after the singer died in an Atlanta hospital. Brown died December 25 at age 73, and his body had been held at an undisclosed location since then.

The service was in sharp contrast to elaborate funerals for the Godfather of Soul held in the days after his death in New York and Augusta, Georgia, where more than 8,500 people filled an arena bearing his name.

The crypt likely will not be Brown's final resting place. A public mausoleum is being built and its location will be announced once it is completed, Noerdlinger said.

Brown's children decided to use their own money to place his body in the crypt instead of waiting for disputes over his estate to be settled in court, Sharpton said in a statement.

"The children wanted to see their father entombed in a resting place without delay," Sharpton said.

Hynie, who says she is Brown's fourth wife, and her son were not included in Brown's will. Attorneys for Brown said his marriage to his backup singer was annulled because Hynie was still married to another man.

A longtime friend of Brown and trustee of his estate was disappointed by the service.

The trustees had made arrangements for Brown to be laid to rest at no cost at a "very prominent memorial garden in Augusta," Buddy Dallas told the AP by phone. "Mr. Brown's not deserving of anyone's backyard," said Dallas, who was not at Saturday's service.

Brown's family blamed the delay in burying the singer on issues surrounding his estate.

DNA Confirms Another James Brown Child
Tue Aug 21, 7:42 PM ET

A woman has proven through DNA testing that she is a child of the late James Brown, said a longtime adviser to the soul singer. The woman is the third person to determine through DNA testing done after Brown's death that the singer is their father, Buddy Dallas told The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle on Monday.

About a dozen DNA tests have been performed. Some people have been ruled out as Brown's children, while other tests are pending, said Dallas, who would not release details about any of the newly found children.

Dallas did not return a message left Tuesday at his office by The Associated Press.

Brown's will, which is being disputed in court, names six children.

One of the children found through DNA testing is LaRhonda Petitt, a 45-year-old retired flight attendant and teacher in Houston. She said the test showed that there is a 99.99 percent probability she is Brown's daughter.

The paper reported a Florida woman confirmed she also is one of Brown's children, but told the paper she did not want to be publicly identified.

The DNA testing happened after Brown died Dec. 25 of heart failure at age 73.

One possible child of Brown's who hasn't had a DNA test is 6-year-old James Brown II, the son of Tomi Rae Hynie. Hynie was one of Brown's backup singers and said she is the singer's fourth wife. But Brown's attorneys continue to dispute that claim, and the boy and his mother are not in the singer's will.

Hynie's attorney, Robert Rosen, said she hasn't changed her mind about DNA testing for her son.

"She believes all the children should be treated equally," Rosen said. "If all the children agree to a DNA test, she will consent to one for James II."

A private guardian for the boy also opposes the test, Rosen said.

YIKES! They are coming out of the woodwork, huh?!

Why would the the little boy need a private guardian if he has his mom?
