BEST....oh, how hard to decide!
Since I collect Rudolph stuff, I'll have to say, hands down, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer. As well as the entire soundtrack from the Rudolph television special. Love Burl Ives!
On with my list...
Father Christmas by Emerson Lake and Palmer. It gets played a LOT in my house, because I have it on two or three different CD's, as well as a CD single of it. It's just a beautiful song.
Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses. The one where the girl's supposed to have met this guy during the year, but everything happens so she doesn't...then Christmas eve she realizes she forgot cranberries, runs to the store, and there he is. It's a fun song, and I think one of the few where you hear "damn" in a Christmas song :omg
Little Drummer Boy performed by Bob Seger. I love the way he does it. Just perfect.
Every song on Jimmy Buffett's "Christmas Island." Because I love my Jimmy.
there's tons more that I LOVE, as I adore Christmas music.
WORST...hands down, Willie Nelson singing "Pretty Paper". I hate that. UGGGGHHHHHH.
*bangs head against the wall*
How could I possibly have forgotten Fairytale of New York? It's the best Christmas song ever. Pure genius. Thanks for reminding me, Rattus and giz. And yes, so sad about Kirsty McColl. The big irony is that she was killed during the holidays.
While I'm at it: Phil Spector's Christmas album with loads of 60's girl groups (the Ronettes and the Supremes are on it) is another great one. Almost makes me forget just how much of a psycho he's become in recent years. (Is he still on trial, by the way, or has he been sentenced? My boyfriend and I talked about it the other day and none of us could for the life of us remember. Sorry for the threadjack.)
Oh, and Johnny Cash has recorded some beautiful holiday songs. His versions of Silent Night and Little Drummer Boy are particular faves.
PS: giz, I'll PM you if I should come to think of more great, slightly off-kilter holiday songs. Great idea by the way. I'm thinking of making a CD myself to get myself in the holiday spirit. (Ah, how I miss the concept of a mixed tape. I used to be all about making tapes for people.)
BEST: Anything on the Dean Martin "Making Spirits Bright" CD, his version of Jingle Bells is wonderful, the Rudolph the Red nosed reindeer- he keeps calling him Rudy, and red beaked, goes into a couple of "german" pronunciations -- it's hilarious. But seriously his Silent Night brings images of being in some old beautiful church while he is singing. A must CD for holiday songs.
I love "Breath of Heaven" by Amy Grant - gives me the chills. I love Martina McBride too, so I love hearing her sing Christmas carols.
I always giggle at the 12 Pains of Christmas.
Can't stand Santa Baby by anyone, especially Madonna.
Favorite all time fun Christmas song.......Christmas Wrappings by the Waitresses. I remember having to buy the cassette of the "Best of the Waitresses" just to have it (HEY...they did sing "Square Pegs" too! :lol )
I also like Johnny Cash's Little Drummer Boy.
Does no one else enjoy Cartman's version of "The dreidel song" or "I'm just a Jew, on Christmas"??? :lol
My favorite Christmas album is Michael W. Smith's first. Beautiful. That one gets full on rotation during the holidays. Also, Vince Gill did a duet with his daughter Jenny called "Let There Be Peace on Earth" that just makes me cry every single time I hear it. Not quite certain why, but I'm a mush. Also.. I have a Nylons CD that is just fun and wonderful to listen to.
We might as well add Adam Sandlers Hannukah song to the mix, funny
