    For me it's Van Morrison.
    Very recognizable voice and temper.
    Such good compositions and lyrics!

Totally agree. My absolute all-time favourite vocalist.

I also love Paula Cole, Sarah Brightman, and Sarah McLaughlin.

For male vocalists, at least, my fave would probably be Raul Malo of the Mavericks. The man has a range and depth that equal Roy Orbison in his prime.

Bryan Adams. Hands down. The man can still sing.

Female artist? Celine Dion. Her control of voice and her range of voice is amazing.

Musical tastes are such a beautiful thing...so diverse and so subjective....

some people love the classically taught, multi-octave, perfect pitch, never miss a note or cue type of voice like Celine Dion...

and others prefer the never took a lesson, often off key, scratchy, raw, too many cigarettes to much whisky, but oh so passionate, voice of a Janis Joplin.

Or a Stevie Nicks who falls somewhere in the middle and is (for me anyway) the most mysterious an alluring of the three.

Roy Orbison and Bono of U2

For female singers, and this is weird since I don't really dig country all that much, Natalie Maines, such a pure voice.

Off the top of my head -
Female: Norah Jones/Sarah McL. They both have naturally beautiful clear voices, as opposed to over-engineered marketing robots. (hmmm wonder who that is....)

Male: KR, he has really come a long way in the last 5 years, sort of found his niche I guess. Also clear and extremely talented. Polyfuse.

For me the best male singer is Jeff Buckley (died far too young in 1997)
The best female artists are Kate Bush and Tori Amos and the best bands are Radiohead and Eels !!
