Bluecool30 Brand New is excellent. I enjoy them muy mucho! I'd have to say my favorite lyrics are from "The Boy who Blocked His Own Shot." Poetry, baby.

Of course, I listen to make sure there are just enough syllables to flow with the music, and the rhyming has got to work too, but what the singer is actually saying isn't really important to me. When I do sit down and read what the lyrics are, I usually think to myself "the music itself is much more emotional than this." Don't get me wrong, some lyrics are fun, some are heartfelt, but compared to the music itself, it never comes close for me.
    This from a Cake fan?

Seriously, I get what you're saying. You ought to give Muse a try--Matt Bellamy's voice is quite an instrument. Sometimes the voice blurs with the guitar till you can't tell which is which (see: Muscle Museum). It's a beautiful thing.

Yeah, I find McCrea's lyrics amusing at best. But the guitar at 3:02 in "Open Book" ? The bass line in "Hem of Your Garment" ? The trumpet in "Frank Sinatra" ?

    All gold.

Speaking of amazing lyrics that tell a story, I was listening one of my favorite Tori Amos covers, "Famous Blue Raincoat," an epistolary confessional written by Leonard Cohen based on a real affair his brother had with his wife. I always loved Tori's emotional rendition of this, in fact, I've never even heard the original, but the writing of the lyrics is brilliant, poignant, achingly honest.

I think it's a beautful bit of writing, so I thought I'd include it here.

    famous blue raincoat

it's four in the morning, the end of december
i'm writing you now just to see if you're better
new york is cold, but i like where i'm living
there's music on clinton street all through the evening.

i hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
you're living for nothing now, i hope you're keeping some kind of record.

yes, and jane came by with a lock of your hair
she said that you gave it to her
that night that you planned to go clear
    did you ever go clear?

ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
you'd been to the station to meet every train
and you came home without lili marlene

and you treated my woman to a flake of your life
and when she came back she was nobody's wife.

well i see you there with the rose in your teeth
    one more thin gypsy thief
    well i see jane's awake --

    she sends her regards.

and what can i tell you my brother, my killer
    what can i possibly say?
i guess that i miss you,
    i guess i forgive you
i'm glad you stood in my way.

if you ever come by here, for jane or for me
your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
i thought it was there for good so i never tried.

and jane came by with a lock of your hair
she said that you gave it to her
that night that you planned to go clear --

    sincerely, leonard cohen

Every now and then I come across a song that has such good lyrics, that I feel they are as enjoyable as the song, if not more. Here's one by Francis Cabrel:

    La Corrida

Depuis le temps que je patiente
    Dans cette chambre noire
    J'entends qu'on s'amuse et qu'on chante
    Au bout du couloir ;
    Quelqu'un a touché le verrou

    Andalousie je me souviens

J'ai jamais appris à me battre
    Contre des poupées
Sentir le sable sous ma tête
C'est fou comme ça peut faire du bien
    J'ai prié pour que s'arrête
    Andalousie je me souviens

Je les entends rire comme je râle
Je les vois danser comme je succombe
Je pensais pas qu'on puisse autant
    S'amuser autour d'une tombe
Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux ?
Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux ?
    Si, si hombre, hombre
    Baila, baila

    Hay que bailar de nuevo
    Y mataremos otros
    Otras vidas, otros toros
    Y mataremos otros
    Venga, venga a bailar...
    Y mataremos otros

    And here's the translation :

During the time that I have waited here in this dark room
I have heard people singing at the end of the corridor
Someone unlocked the door and I plunged into daylight
I saw trumpets and barriers and the people around them

At first I thought I simply had to defend myself
But I began to understand this place had no exit
They closed the door behind me, they were afraid I would go back
I will finally catch this ridiculous dancer

    Are these people serious?
    Are these people serious?

Andalusia, I remember the prairies bordered with cactuses
I won't tremble before this little puppet
I'll get him and his hat, make them spin like a sunflower
Tonight the torero's wife will sleep soundly

    Are these people serious?
    Are these people serious?

I chased ghosts and almost touched the dancers
They pierced my neck hard so that I'd fall
Where are these acrobats coming from with their paper costumes?
I've never learned to fight against dolls

I can feel the sand beneath my head
It feels so good, I prayed so it would all stop
    Andalusia, I remember

I can hear them laugh as hard as I moan
I see them dance as I buckle
I did not know one could have so much fun around a grave

    Are these people serious?
    Are these people serious?

    Yes mister,
    Dance dance
    You must dance again
    And we will kill others
    Other lives, other bulls
    And we will kill others
    Come to dance
    And we will kill others

The first 10 times I heard this song I really had no idea what it talked about, but I liked the music. Eventually I checked out the lyrics and still saw some ambiguity about what it could mean. Eventually I understood this is a story about a bull about to enter the corrida and be killed, giving us a first person perspective of his grim situation. Cabrel very eloquently shows his feelings about corridas with this song. In fact I'm not sure he could have made his point more poingantly than through these words. Plus the song is really good, too.

I've heard a lot of people say that this is their favorite Broadway tune ever...I know it's one of mine.

"Defying Gravity" - from the musical Wicked

    GLINDA
(spoken) Elphaba - why couldn't you have stayed calm for
once, instead of flying off the handle
    (sung) I hope you're happy
    I hope you're happy now
I hope you're happy how you
    Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you're clever

    ELPHABA
    I hope you're happy
    I hope you're happy, too
I hope you're proud how you
    Would grovel in submission
    To feed your own ambition

    BOTH
So though I can't imagine how
I hope you're happy right now

    GLINDA
(spoken) Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry.
(sung) You can still be with the Wizard
What you've worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted

    ELPHABA
    (spoken) I know
    (sung) But I don't want it -
    No - I can't want it
    Anymore:

    Something has changed within me
    Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
    Of someone else's game
    Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
    Close my eyes and leap

    It's time to try
    Defying gravity
    I think I'll try
    Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down

    GLINDA
    Can't I make you understand
    You're having delusions of grandeur

    ELPHABA
    I'm through accepting limits
    'Cuz someone says they're so
    Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
    Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost
    I'd sooner buy
    Defying gravity
    Kiss me goodbye
    I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
(spoken) Glinda - come with me. Think of what we could
    do: together.

    (sung) Unlimited
    Together we're unlimited
Together we'll be the greatest team
    There's ever been
    Glinda -
Dreams, the way we planned 'em

    GLINDA
    If we work in tandem

    BOTH
There's no fight we cannot win
    Just you and I
    Defying gravity
    With you and I
    Defying gravity

    ELPHABA
    They'll never bring us down
    (spoken) Well? Are you coming?

    GLINDA
    I hope you're happy
    Now that you're choosing this

    ELPHABA
    (spoken) You too
(sung) I hope it brings you bliss

    BOTH
I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy, my friend

ELPHABASo if you care to find me
    Look to the western sky
    As someone told me lately
"Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly"
    And if I'm flying solo
    At least I'm flying free
    To those who'd ground me
Take a message back from me
    Tell them how I am
    Defying gravity
    I'm flying high
    Defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down

    GLINDA
    I hope you're happy

    CITIZENS OF OZ
    Look at her, she's wicked
    Get her

    ELPHABA
    Bring me down

    CITIZENS OF OZ
    No one mourns the wicked
So we've got to bring her

    ELPHABA
    Ahhh

    CITIZENS OF OZ
    Down
    Viva La Vie Boheme!

This is the theme song for Spiderman 2. I think it is perfect for it, and an amazing song. And i normally don't like songs by Dashboard Confessional!

    Vinticated

    Hope dangles on a string
    Like slow spinning redemption
    Winding in and winding out
The shine of it has caught my eye
    And roped me in
    So mesmerizing, and so hypnotizing
    I am captivated,
    I am...

    [Chorus]
    Vindicated
    I am selfish
    I am wrong
    I am right
    I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along
    And I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

    So clear
Like the diamond in your ring
    Cut to mirror your intention
    Oversized and overwhelmed
The shine of which has caught my eye
And rendered me so isolated, so motivated
I am certain now that I am...

    [Chorus]

So, turn up the corners of your lips
Part them and feel my finger tips
    Trace the moment, fall forever
    Defense is paper thin
Just one touch and I'd be in
Too deep now to ever swim against the current
So let me slip away [3x]
So let me slip against the current
So let me slip away [4x]

    [Chorus]

    Like hope
    Dangles on a string
    Like slow spinning redemption...

Okay, the next two songs have a story behind them. One of the people from Taking Back Sunday slept with the lead singer of Brand News girlfriend. So Jesse, of Brand New wrote Seventy times 7. To counter it, Taking back Sunday wrote "There is no I in team". They are both awesome songs, mostly because of the lyrics.

    "Seventy times 7"

Back in school they never taught us
    what we needed to know
Like how to deal with despair
    or someone breakin your heart
-Twelve years I've held it all together,
but a night like this is beggin to pull me apart.
I played it quiet left you deep in conversation
I felt uncool and hung out around the kitchen
    I remember I kept thinking
that I know you never would
And now I know I want to kill you
like only a best friend could

Everyone's caught on to everything you do
    Everyone's caught on to..

As if it happening wasn't enough
I gotta go and write a song
just to remind myself how bad it sucked.
Ignore the sun, covers over my head
Wrote a message on my pillow that says
    "Jesse, stay asleep in bed"
Don't apologize - I hope you choke and die
Search your shelf for something which to hang yourself
They say you need to pray
if you want to go to heaven
But they don't tell you what to say
when your whole life has gone to Hell

Everyone's caught on to everything you do
    Everyone's caught on to..
(and I can't let you let me down again)
Everyone's caught on to everything you do
(and I can't let you let me down again)
    Everyone's caught on to..

So is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause I've seen more spine in jellyfish
I've seen more guts in eleven-year-old kids
Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you cna think of me when you forget your seatbelt
and again when your head goes through the windshield

Is that what you call tact?
You're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back
So let's end this call and end this conversation
And is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause you left the frays from the ties you severed
when you say "best friends" means friends forever

Is that what you call a getaway?!?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause I've seen more spine in jellyfish
I've seen more guts in eleven-year-old kids
Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
and again when your head goes through the windshield!

(is that what you call a getaway?)
Everyone's caught on to everything you do
(tell me what you got away with)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(cause ive seen more spine in jellyfish)
Everyone's caught on to everything you do
(and ive seen more guts in 11 year old kids)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(have another drink and drive yourself home)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(i hope theres ice on all the roads)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(and you can think of me, when you forget your seatbelt)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(and again when your head goes through the winshield!)
    Everyone's caught on to..

(I can't let you let me down again)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(and I can't let you let me down again)
    Everyone's caught on to..
(I can't let you let me down again)
Everyone's caught on to everything you do
(and I can't let you let me down again)
    Everyone's caught on to..

"There is no I in team"

    What I can't regret,
    can't you just forget it?
    I started something I couldn't finish
    And if we go down,
    we go down together
    best friends means,
    well best friends means

    And I've got a twenty-dollar bill
that says you're up late night starting
fist fights versus fences in your backyard
Wearing your black eye like a badge of honor
    Soaking in sympathy
from friends who never loved you
nearly half as much as me

Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
it's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
    it's something unforgivable

    What I can't regret,
    can't you just forget it?
    I started something I couldn't finish
    If we go down,
    we go down together
    best friends means,
    well best friends means

    You never knew
    well i never told you...
Everything I know about breaking hearts
I learned from you, it's true
I've never done it with the style and grace you have
But I've made long term plans
    based on these mistakes

Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
it's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
    it's something unforgivable

Is this what you call tact?
I swear you're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back
    so let's end this call,
    and end this conversation
    there's nothing worse...
(that's right he said, that's right he said it)
I swear, you have no idea
The jealousy that became me thinking
    (that's right he said)
that you always had it way too easy

Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
it's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
    it's something unforgivable

Best friends means I pulled the trigger
Best friends means you get what you deserve
Best friends means I pulled the trigger
Best friends means you get what you deserve
Best friends means I pulled the trigger
Best friends means you get what you deserve
Best friends means I pulled the trigger
Best friends means you get what you deserve
Best friends means I pulled the trigger
Best friends means you get what you deserve

Best friend thinks I pulled the trigger
Best friend thinks you get what you deserve

Which do you like better,Seventy times 7 or There is no I team?
    You stole my smart quote!

    Throw Your Arms Around me

I will come for you at night time
I will raise you from your sleep
I will kiss you in four places
I'll go running along your street
I will squeeze the life out of you
You will make me laugh and make me cry
    We will never forget it
You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky
    We may never meet again
So shed your skin and lets get started
And you will throw your arms around me

I dreamed of you at night time
And I watched you in your sleep
I met you in high places
I touched your head and touched your feet
So if you dissapear out of view
You know, I will never say goodbye
Though I try to forget it
You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky

    We may never meet again
So shed your skin and lets get started
And you will throw your arms around me
Yeah you will throw you arms around me
    (repeat to end

    Love is Stronger than Death
    by The The

    LoveLove Love
    LoveLove Love

Me and my friend were walking
In the cold light of mourning.
Tears may blind the eyes but the soul is not deceived
In this world even winter ain't what it seems.

Here come the blue skies, Here comes springtime.
When the rivers run high and the tears run dry.
    When everything that dies
    Shall rise.

LoveLove Love is stronger than death.
LoveLove Love is stronger than death.

In our lives we hunger for those we cannot touch.
All the thoughts unuttered & all the feelings unexpressed
Play upon our hearts like the mist upon our breath.
But, awoken by grief, our spirits speak
"How could you believe that the life within the seed
    that grew arms that reached
    And a heart that beat.
    And lips that smiled
    And eyes that cried.
    Could ever die?"

Here come the blue skies Here comes springtime.
When the rivers run high & the tears run dry.
    When everything that dies.
    Shall rise.

LoveLove Love is stronger than death.
LoveLove Love is stronger than death.

    Shall rise. Shall rise.
    Shall rise. Shall rise.

    Now My Heart Is Full--Morrissey

    There’s gonna be some trouble
A whole house will need re-building
And everyone I love in the house
Will recline on an analyst’s couch quite
    Soon
    Your father cracks a joke
    And in the usual way
    Empties the room

    Tell all of my friends
    (I don’t have too many
Just some rain-coated lovers’ puny brothers)
    Dallow, spicer, pinkie, cubitt
    Rush to danger
    Wind up nowhere
Patric doonan - raised to wait
I’m tired again, I’ve tried again, and

    Now my heart is full
    Now my heart is full
    And I just can’t explain
So I won’t even try to

    Dallow, spicer, pinkie, cubitt
    Every jammy stressford poet
    Loafing oafs in all-night chemists
    Loafing oafs in all-night chemists
    Underact - express depression
Ah, but bunnie I loved you
    I was tired again
    I’ve tried again, and

    Now my heart is full
    Now my heart is full
    And I just can’t explain
So I won’t even try to

    Could you pass by ?
    Could you pass by ?
    Could you pass by ?
    Could you pass by ?
    Could you pass by ?
    Oh ...

    Now my heart is full
    Now my heart is full
    And I just can’t explain
    So ... slow ...
    Slow ... slow ... slow ... slow ... slow ...

    Between Angels and Insects

    There's no money
    There's no possessions
    Only obsessions
    I dont need that s**t
    Take my money
    Take my obsession

    I just wanna be heard
Loud and clear are my words
    Coming from within man
    Tell 'em what you heard
It's about a revolution in your heart
    And in your mind
    You cant find the conclusion
    Lifestyle and obsession
    Daimond rings get you nothing
    But a life-long lesson
    And you're pocket book stressin'
You're a slave to the system
    Working jobs that you hate
For that s**t you don't need
It's too bad the world is based on greed
Step back and see stop thinking 'bout yourself
    Start thinking about

There's no money, There's no possession
Only obsession, I don't need that shit
Take my money, Take my possesion
Take my obsession, I don't need that

    'Cause everything is nothing
    And emptiness is in everything
This reality is just really just a f***ed up dream
With the flesh and the blood
    That you call your soul
Flip it inside out, it's a big black hole
Take your money, burn it up like an asteroid
Possessions they are never gonna fill the void
Take it away and learn the best lesson
The heart, the soul, the life, the passion

There's no money, There's no possession
    Only obsession, I don't need that s**t
Take my money, Take my possesion
Take my obsession, I don't need that s**t

    Money, possesion, obsession

    Present yourself, press your clothes
Comb your hair and clock in
You just can't win, just can't win
The things you own, own you
    Now!

There's no money, There's no possession
    Only obsession, I don't need that s**t
Take my money, Take my possesion
Take my obsession, I don't need that shit

F*** your money, f*** your possesion
    F*** your obsession, I don't need that s***

    Money, possession, obsession
    I don't need that s***
    Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and Fill me with your poison...
