Why Should I care by Sara Evans

Oh, Why should I care if you, found somebody new,
and you look like you're in love
and why should I care if she looks alot like me,
and she's all you've ever dreamed of?
I didn't care enough to keep you around so tell me
    why should I care now?

I was the one who let you go,
I never told you that I loved you,
    I couldn't promise anything
    when you needed me to
oh, my heart was never really there,
    so why should I care,
    why should I care?
    I just do

So why should I care if I
    mean nothing in your eyes
what you felt for me is gone,
and why would I feel that way,
    now that it's too late,
to change what I did wrong?
Oh I didn't care enough to keep you around,
so tell me why should I care now

I was the one who let you go,
I never told you that I loved you
    I couldn't promise anything,
    when you needed me to
oh, my heart was never really there
    so why should I care,
    why should i care?
    I just do

When I listen to any type of music, I don't really listen to the lyrics. I treat the human voice as an instrument. I'm not really interested in what the songwriter is trying to tell me, and when I do pay attention, I'm usually not impressed. Of course, I listen to make sure there are just enough syllables to flow with the music, and the rhyming has got to work too, but what the singer is actually saying isn't really important to me. When I do sit down and read what the lyrics are, I usually think to myself "the music itself is much more emotional than this." Don't get me wrong, some lyrics are fun, some are heartfelt, but compared to the music itself, it never comes close for me.

Anyone else like me, or am I just a total freak?

That makes perfect sense to me, Z. I do appreciate great lyrics in songwriting, but there are some instances (Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine) where the voice is definitely more like an instrument than a vehicle for the lyrics.

Great example with Cocteau Twins, Manny. I listen to a lot of foreign language music and not understanding the lyrics doesn't hamper my enjoyment of the music at all. It's more about feeling than understanding.

That said, there are some lyrics that demand attention, simply because they are like poetry in their own right. Aimee Mann, for example, her lyrics are too clever by half; I think not paying those attention would be missing out. Mozzz in here might back me up on the fact that Morrissey is like a modern Oscar Wilde set to a beat. There are many great lyricists out there, whose writing I can fully enjoy even apart from the music itself.

Anyway, Z, to conclude: I can completely understand what you're saying here. And yeah you are a freak, but what's that got to do with this thread?

Yes, excellent Cocteau Twins reference. Definitely one group I don't mind listening to even though I know less than half the lyrics - you can just feel what she's trying to say... And I've always appreciated how Johnny Marr would write a song, and Morrissey would write a song, and then they would work the two pieces together so that each Smiths song could basically stand on it's own, whether you were focusing on the music or the words each time you listened...

That being said, I was surprised not to see any of The Smiths/Morrissey lryics quoted here, Snow, are you slacking? (Just kidding, I did see you posted Depeche Mode lyrics earlier, so you earned points for that, hehe)

Mayer's got a ton of good ones, but this is a favorite of mine.

    3X5 by John Mayer

    I'm writing you to
catch you up on places I've been
    You held this letter
probably got excited, but there's nothing else inside it

didn't have a camera by my side this time
hopping I would see the world with both my eyes
maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way
    with words

Today skies are painted colors of a cowboy's cliche'
And strange how clouds that look like mountains in the sky
    are next to mountains anyway

Didn't have a camera by my side this time
Hoping I would see the world with both my eyes
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way
    but let me say

You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life
You'll be with me next time I go outside
    just no more 3x5's

Guess you had to be there
Guess you had to be with me

    Today I finally overcame
tryin' to fit the world inside a picture frame
Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm in the mood to
lose my way but let me say

You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life
You'll be with me next time I go outside
    just no more 3x5's
    no more 3x5's

    Here's another old favorite.

    Bang Bang by Dispatch

She woke me up with a bang, bang
Looking over cross eyed had a big
Hunch that the world was a big lie
When I got up all the blood to my head
I got so dizzy fell back to my bed
I went over to the way side
    Looking for the high tide
What will I find will I find will I find find
All I saw was a man that had a hat
That had a pom-pom he's been there for
Years can someone tell me how long

    [Chorus:]
    Wake up to tell me
    Wake up to show me
    What I could not find

You see this woman woke me up
At a quarter to three and I didn't
Know it then but she put a spell on
Me said I had to go down to where
The cliffs mee the sea and meat an
Old man to present my plea
So I headed way down to the big pier
To await and confront my big fear
I wheeled around behind to my
Blindside to find and old man with a
    Lime and a kind eye
Said mister, mister with your beard so long
Won't you be a saint and tell me
    Just where I'm going
He pointed to a conch shell and then
To the lime and said this is all
I really need to get by

    [Chorus]

    Hey mister man
    I know you don't know
Who you think I, think I am
But I can safely say, that I
Should've been sleeping the day away

I said scuse me, if you've got the
    Time he shrugged his shoulders
    Said get a spine
Coconut hit me on the head
    Jonesin' for a fig
    I booked last night
    I need another fix

Just then I see a twinkle twinkle
In the old man's eye and a wave
Tossed bottle in thrown to the sky
I caught it on the rebound
It landed with a soft sound
I took out the message and put the
    Bottle down
Inside was the antidote to the spell
And I read it to the old man 'cause he
    Couldn't read so well
    Said don't worry about a
    Thing you know your
Path is true just ease your
    Mind have a banana
    Or two

    Goodness, goodness, woe is me
The man nearly flipped to learn
That he was free but just before we
    Left and started kicking it
I picked up the bottle and star sixed it
Kick kick shuffle shuffle back to the beach
With a tune on my lips and my quest in reach
If that woman comes to you with
Her song so sweet, say damn
    Let the poor sucker sleep

One more while I'm at it.

    Someday by the Strokes

In many ways they'll miss the good old days
    Someday, someday
Yeah it hurts to say but I want you to stay
    Sometimes, sometimes
When we was young oh man did we have fun
    Always, always
Promises they break before they're made
    Sometimes, sometimes

Oh, my ex says i'm lacking in depth
    I will do my best
You say you wanna stay by my side
    Darling your head's not right
I see alone we stand together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I'll be alright
I'm working so I won't have to try so hard
    Tables they turn sometimes.
    Oh someday.
I ain't wasting no more time.

    Trying, trying.

And now my fears, they come to me in threes
    So I, sometimes
They fade my friend, you say the strangest things
    I find, sometimes

Oh, my ex says i'm lacking in depth
Say I will try my best
You say you wanna stay by my side
    Darling your head's not right
I see alone we stand together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I'll be alright
I'm working so I won't have to try so hard
    Tables they turn sometimes.
    Oh someday

I ain't wasting no more time

*snuffle* HUH, what? What's going on?

Yes, asleep at the job here, Mozzz, guilty as charged. This is for you then, some old school glumdrop Morrissey.

    HEAVEN KNOWS I'M MISERABLE NOW

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

    In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

    In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

What she asked of me at the end of the day
    Caligula would have blushed

"You've been in the house too long" she said
    And I (naturally) fled

    In my life
    Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye ?

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

"You've been in the house too long" she said
    And I (naturally) fled

    In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

Actually, this is another one of my favorite Smiths songs...I just adore that line, "You can pin and mount me like a butterfly."

    REEL AROUND THE FOUNTAIN

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
    And you made him old

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
    And you made him old
    You made him old

    Reel around the fountain
    Slap me on the patio
    I'll take it now
    Oh ...

    Fifteen minutes with you
    Well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were virtually dead
    And they were so wrong

    Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were easily led
    And they were half-right
Oh, they ... oh, they were half-right, oh

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
    And you made him old
It's time that the tale were told
Of how you took a child
    And you made him old
    You made him old

    Oh, reel around the fountain
    Slap me on the patio
    I'll take it now
    Ah ... oh ...

    Fifteen minutes with you
    Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
    Oh, but I do.
    Fifteen minutes with you
    Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
    I do.
    Oh, I ... oh, I do
    Oh ...

I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said
    Two lumps, please
    You're the bee's knees
    But so am I

Oh, meet me at the fountain
    Shove me on the patio
    I'll take it slowly
    Oh ...

    Fifteen minutes with you
    Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
    Oh, but I do.
    Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, no, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
    I do.
    Oh, I ... I do
    Oh, I do
    Oh, I do
    Oh, I do

Here's one of my favorites. I like lyrics that tell a story, which is one of the reasons I like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Mark Knopfler so much. Anyway, this is Dire Straits.

    Telegraph Road

A long time ago came a man on a track
walking thirty miles with a pack on his back
and he put down his load where he thought it was the best
he made a home in the wilderness
he built a cabin and a winter store
and he plowed up the ground by the cold lake shore
and then other travelers came walking down the track
and they never went further, no, and they never went back
then came the churches then came the schools
then came the lawyers then came the rules
then came the trains and the trucks with their loads
and the dirty old track was the Telegraph road

Then came the mines - then came the ore
then there was the hard times then there was a war
telegraph sang a song about the world outside
Telegraph road got so deep and so wide
    like a rolling river. . .

And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze
people driving home from the factories
    six lanes of traffic
three lanes moving slow. . .

I used to like to go to work but they shut it down
I got a right to go to work but there's no work here to be found
yes and they say we're gonna have to pay what's owed
we're gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed
and the birds upon the wires and the telegraph poles
they can always fly away from this rain and this cold
you can hear them singing out their telegraph code
all the way down the Telegraph road

You know I'd sooner forget but I remember those nights
when life was just a bet on a race between the lights
you had your head on my shoulder you had your hand in my hair
now you act a little colder like you don't seem to care
but believe in me baby and I'll take you away
from out of this darkness and into the day
from these rivers of headlights these rivers of rain
from the anger that lives on the streets with these names
'cos I've run every red light on memory lane
I've seen desperation explode into flames
and I don't want to see it again. . .

From all of these signs saying sorry but we're closed
all the way down the Telegraph road

This is a long song, and I like to listen and sing along while I'm in my car making home visits. When the song gets to the part that says " I used to like to go to work, but they shut it down, I've got a right to go to work but there's no work here to be found" I sometimes cry out loud , because I live in an economically depressed area, and the people I serve seem so bewildered that they've worked their whole life and suddenly find themselves without a job. And there's a hint of desperation in the way he sings the song; it just breaks my heart.
I love you, you love me, we're a happy family...
