Actually, and I am a HUGE fan, I would say that Elvis was TOTALLY manufactured. He was discovered after making a throw-away record in a booth in the drugstore for his mother. The rest was the Colonel's doing. Elvis had the talent, but the Colonel pulled the strings.

The Beatles on the other hand were self-made. They were already popular in England and had a huge following. They were the house band at the "Cavern Club" when Brian Epstein discovered them and help direct their rise to word-wide startdom. But they wrote all of their own songs and displayed their own personal political beliefs (can you imagine Britney Spears trying to make a serious statement regarding politics or the state of the world?).

Self-Made Baby! The Stones, like the Beatles, had a huge following in England before they ever journied across the pond. They have also been in charge of their own fate. They write 99% of thier own music and have remained together all these years.

The "British Invasion" of the early/mid 60's certainly helped but, overall, I would say whole-heartedly "self-made".

The Monkees
