"This is Hardcore" is much darker than anything before it and I love it, especially the opening track, "The Fear". If memory holds, Jarvis Cocker wrote it after he went a bit nuts after the success of "A Different Class." I'm kinda meh on "We Love Life" aside from "Bad Cover Version"--one of my absolute favorite Pulp songs and ranks up there with Jarvis' duet with Miki Berenyi of Lush on Lush's "Lovelife" album. That song is called "Ciao" and is one great kiss-off song.
One word on buying "Hardcore"--it's worth it to shell out the bucks for the double CD "deluxe" version.

Excellent--thank you both for the recommendations. The fact that "This is Hardcore" is much darker than their other albums sounds very appealing. Not that there is anything wrong with rocking out to "Common People," but you know. ;)
Curse you, amazon.com, for not working today!

I have literally hundreds of albums. I've never been able to bring myself to get rid of them, even though I rarely listen to them anymore and have replaced a lot of them on CD.
I have often thought of framing some of the album covers to use as art. Like the cover for Disraeli Gears and Sgt. Pepper.

Phobia - Breaking Benjamin very good, every song could be a single
3 Doors Down - 3 Doors Down - good but more of country feel to it
Re: What's the last CD you bought?
I watched the movie Juno over the weekend and bought the soundtrack almost immediately after it was over. There are a couple of tracks that are a little odd, but overall I find it really charming.
ETA: The one track I had heard prior to the movie was the Sonic Youth cover of the Carpenters' song Superstar. As much as I want to like that track, I think it is my least favorite on the CD - it feels like it is trying too hard to be dark and creepy.
Re: What's the last CD you bought?
Hooray! My deluxe copy of "This is Hardcore" by Pulp arrived the other day. I love it. Love it love it love it. The opening track "The Fear" is awesome, the title track is excellent, "Help the Aged" is great, "Cocaine Socialism" and "It's a Dirty World" on the bonus track are outstanding. Actually, every single track on the two discs is great. Thank you for the recommendation to get this version, PhoneGrrrl . . . reading the deluxe liner notes really gives the album a clear context, and I probably wouldn't appreciate it as much without them.
From now on, before I ever write another song, I shall ask myself . . . What Would Jarvis Do?
Re: What's the last CD you bought?
Glad you liked it, Manny! :yay
I just ordered the new Ladytron CD, "Velocifero". I hope it is as good as "604", which is my favorite.
Re: What's the last CD you bought?
I finally broke down and got Bassboosa's debut CD. Love it! It was well worth the $22.

Feist - The Reminder - This is fantastic. The perfect mixof soft songs, sexy songs etc. Besides her singles, she has a little RnB flavor in her music, with the heavy base.
Fergie - The Dutches - I try my hardest not to like it. I really do. But I can't dislike it, her music is addictive. The album has many different styles on it, from Bubble Gum Pop, to Hip Hop to rock to reggae. It's great!
