Re: Real World 26: Back To Las Vegas

During the aftershow, Dustin mentioned that he had not been allowed to play sports in high school, because his parents wouldn't let him because it was against their religion. Mike was puzzled by that and asked him what religion, and Dustin replied that he was raised Pentecostal and that his parents felt that participating in high school sports could lead him to falling under bad influences.

If Dustin was raised in a household so conservative that high school sports were considered a bad influence, he may have a lot of trouble dealing with the idea that he may be gay (if he is--I have no idea).

Also during the aftershow, he had a rather bad Freudian slip. I think he meant to say that he might be hypocritical at times and instead said, "I might be homosexual at times" and then quickly raced to correct himself, while poor Heather just covered her face with her hands (she did that a lot--I think she was more embarrassed about his discussion of masturbating on camera than he was).

So sports are a big no-no because they can result in you falling in with the wrong crowd...did his mom say this while she was out buying and doing drugs?

I have a feeling that Dustin either A) didnt do so hot in sports and wont admit it (especially since per his comments many of his friends got athletic scholarships) or B) he couldn't play because of other reasons (perhaps he was busy taking care of his mom, ashamed of how people would react to his family, etc)... but I just can't see his mom forbidding sports while inbetween drug-induced highs...

And this is why the roommates do not trust him. He tried to cover up his gay porn past so much that he is viewed as a total fraud! It is tough to believe anything he says now.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I felt like the roommates treated Dustin way too harshly. I'm not sure what is with the roommates this season acting like they have the right to know everyone's whole life story...but the only one who should have been told is Heather, and only because they were sleeping together.

On my part, I don't think he is gay. I think he did this thing in his past and no matter what he says, he IS ashamed of it and I think he also deep down feels that the guy who produced it did take advantage of him. Add that to the fact that he has said in interviews that some gay men have invaded his personal space because they recognize him from the videos and those together probably make him more defensive and secretive about that period of his life and it can come out in episodes of homophobia. I said before I got the impression that him not wanting a gay roommate was more because he was afraid of being recognized and this whole thing coming out. Should he have lied about the things he did in the videos or made homophibic comments? No....but I can kind of see why he did those things. Like I said, he seems to want to forget that part of his life ever happened and it's because he's afraid people would judge him like the roommates did.

And for that matter, I do NOT believe any of the roommates (other than Heather) behaved maturely about confronting him. None of them (again, except Heather) has any right to know anything about his past aside from what he chooses to tell them, yet they act like he's some serial killer. Nany, Adam, and Naomi were gossiping and laughing at him behind his back. Leroy and Mike-who are supposed to be Dustin's friends- both told him they thought he should go home just for lying about his past. Not one person said "Hey, what you did in your past is behind you and not who you are now. If you want to talk about it, I'm here, but if you don't, it's none of my business." And while Mike expressed on the Aftershow his disappointment in the homophobic comments, he didn't really seem to articulate that in Vegas.

Just keep in mind that MTV does a ton of editing!!! I bet there is allot more of Dustin walking around the suite throwing slurs at the gay community. So keep in mind, we are probably no way seeing as much as the roomies. We have seen a ton of clips of Dustin being very prejudice against gay people. And I am guessing that is were the anger from the roomies comes from. He is just a big hypocrite . just look at the first scene of this show Dustin does gay porn but LOUDLY will not ride with any of the male roomies on the gondola's at the Venetian IDIOT.

DING DING DING! I'm sorry but Dustin to me comes of as one of those people who lie and lie and lie and then lie some more until they get caught AND THEN it's always someone else's fault. Him trying to claim that his parents were super religious and that they wouldn't let him play sports because of it completely contradicts his stories of his mother always being high and having sex with random strangers. To me this was just another way Dustin could blame some more of his problems on someone else...this time that person being his Mother.

He did the same thing when the truth of his gay porn came out to the roommates. Instead of owning it and admitting to the fact that he had been a phony liar he got angry at Heather and tried to blame her, telling her to get away from him. I've known people like Dustin time and time again....it's always someone else's fault and Dustin is always the victim. I couldn't believe that he actually made the roommates, specifically Heather, feel bad for him when his lies were exposed but that is what people who always have to be the victim do. Loved the aftershow where Chet from Real World: Brooklyn called him out for his homophobic hypocrisy.

EXACTLY! You stated everything that I was thinking. I think we can add EXCUSES to your excellent analysis as a favorable fallback in Dustin's world of victimhood and lies as well. One prime example came form the aftershow when they directly confronted him about some of his homophobic slurs and stance on marriage and instead of being a man and saying "you know what, I was wrong to say that...Id love to sit down and try to figure out how to be a better person and not trash other folks" Dustin used this excuse "well, Im still learning." Not ONCE did he apologize in that little diatribe. So, Dustin is a liar, a victim, an excuse maker and all-around homophobic (ironically) piece of crap. It is always something with this guy--either blaming others, blaming his family, getting angry for no reason, 'fudging' the truth, he is a victim, etc...

He has/had such an excellent opportunity to grow and learn in the house, especially with a guy like Leroy around--he had a rough past and flat-out admitted that he was willing to learn and change his stance toward the gay community (that scene in the hallway was so moving) but Dustin simply lied and threw away the opportunity to grow and better himself. The saddest part is that Dustin cant stop repeating how happy he is and how all of these events have made him a better person--seriously?

I actually agree with EVERYTHING you said!

Heather is the only one that should even remotely be freaking out!

It was ok for Adam to carry on like he did...Breaking things, punching things, no remorse whatso ever! It was ok for him to hang around. he had waaay tooooo many chances...in my opinion.....BUT Dustin should leave because he didn't tell them about his past!!!! I don't think so!

I cant speak for all of us but I am not supporting that Dustin leave..if anything I think he should stay and try to learn something! And count me as someone who thinks EVERYTHING that Adam has done was far worse--sure, Dustin is a LIAR but he hasn't broken any laws (even though he has hurt a lot of people, particularly Heather, emotionally). Adam, on the other hand, is headed for the big house--and I dont mean a juvenile detention facility.

[oh, I should edit that I dont think Dustin can 'learn' from everyone in the house--Nany, Naomi and Cooke are worthless (and I agree with many others who think it is crazy how some of these roomies (ie-the girls) think everyone owes them their life story and friendship upfront)]
