    Whale Rider - 06/06

    From Hollywood.com

Synopsis: On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs have always been the first-born and male. Many generations later, the contemporary tale revolves around a young mother whose male newborn twin dies in childbirth. Her young husband flees New Zealand in grief, leaving grandparents Koro and Nanny Flowers to raise the sole survivor, a feisty little girl named Pai, who radiates with life and energy. Itís no wonder that her grandmother and the entire community love her, but alas, the grandfather she worships is too busy mourning the loss of the baby boy he expected would lead the tribe to better days.

I saw the trailer for this last weekend, and while the themes wouldn't normally interest me, I think I will put this on my list of films to see for one simple reason...

I noticed that Whale Rider won the audience choice prize at several major international film festivals.

In my experience as a an avid film-festival film-goer, I know that audience choice awards are not to be taken lightly. Audience choice selections in the past have generally been *very* entertaining and well-made, if not always complex or though-provoking.

    Cheers for the info, fluff.

We tried to see this at the Taos Film Festival and couldn't get tickets. I heard it was really great.

    That picture is really striking.
Iím haunted a little this evening by feelings that have no vocabulary and events that should be explained in dimensions of lint rather than words.

Given that I'm a kiwi, and part-Maori too, couldn't help but having my say!! I loved whale-rider - it's a beautiful story from one of our most talented writers, and I think, though it's a Maori story, it has universal themes. Also Keisha Castle-Hughes, who plays Paikea, does an amazing job considering she was plucked from her school to play the part - if you see it check out her stage speech - its Oscar-winning stuff I reckon (but then ... I'm very biased!!!)
