I would like to have seen some credit given to Victor Hugo during the Oscars last night, unless I missed it. The novel he wrote 151 years ago has produced so many films, plays, and musicals. I've listed just a few of them below.
The 1935 film directed by Richard Boleslawski, starring Fredric March and Charles Laughton, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture
The 1937 radio adaptation by Orson Welles[36]
The 1958 film adaptation directed by Jean-Paul Le Chanois, with an international cast starring Jean Gabin, Bernard Blier, Bourvil.[37] Called "the most memorable film version", it was filmed in East Germany and was overtly political.[38]
The 1980 musical, by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg[39]
The 1998 film, starring Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush[40]
The 2000 TV miniseries, starring Gérard Depardieu and John Malkovich[41]
The 2012 film, starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe[42]
