Plot Summary:

Sydney, a young, blind violinist is given the chance to see for the first time since childhood through a miraculous corneal transplant. As Sydney adjusts to a dizzying new world of colors and shapes, she is haunted by frightening visions of death itself capturing the doomed and dragging them away from the world of the living. Re: The Eye

I just came home from watching this movie, and I must say: the Hong Kong film is miles ahead of this version. Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say miles, but the original was respectively, better, considering this was supposed to be a "remake", rather than a "reinterpretation".

Here's what I thought:

Go watch the original, if you thought this movie delivered less than cheap thrills! Well, because in the original... it was more sweet! Yes, sweet. The ending leaving you with an "awww." And I believed the original, fit more in the Asian culture and their beliefs of spirits and ghosts. The dead "report card" boy, chewing on candles exemplifies the custom of lighting candles on the shrine of the deceased. The original also offered a more raw feeling of seeing ghosts. I can assure, after watching the Chinese Eye, you'll get up thinking you see ghosts. I don't want to give up too much away but my heart was touched at the end. Plus, there was a solid romantic subplot between the Heroine and the Doctor (who is a lot more attractive in the original).
[[I'm not sure if it was a mistranslation, but in the American "Eye", Sydney opens the story with this line "You only see what you believe" (Which aesthetically, didn't grab me) while in the Chinese "Eye", the heroine begins the movie with... "Some people say this world is ugly" and at the end of the Chinese version, when the heroine loses her sight (again), she goes on to accept the fact of being blind and ends with "I've seen everything beautiful in this world already" and she walks up to her newly found love (the Doctor, who's a cutie) and they smile looking at each other and it ends there. Also, in the original, the accident leaves everyone dead except the main protagonists. Though it was tragic (much like Titanic), I felt that was more realistic and left a stronger impact. I highly recommend the original.]]

The remake, I believed, didn't live up to the original.

Re: The Eye

My boyfriend and I just got finished watching this movie and I'm not really sure what to really think. It leaves you hanging alittle bit I think.
I did like it though. I'll admit, It had me wanting to know more of what was going to happen.

I loved it. Jessica Alba was brilliant.
