Any nominee becomes a member of the academy, but there are other ways to be a mamber as well. I don't know why I know it, but I know that Vince Vaughn is a member, but has never been nominated. Anyone who is a member gets an automatic invitation to the awards show, so by being a member, Busey was invited, and obviously decided his career needed the publicity of his going.

Colin Farrell's "persona" annoys me too, but I gained a lot more respect for him as an actor after I watched The New World. It was a really fantastic movie. I'm not sure I have ever watched a movie that conveyed so much emotion with so little dialog.

It's on Time's website at: George Clooney: The Last Movie Star - TIME And he did look good at the Oscars. I like a male movie star who isn't afraid of shampoo (I'm looking at you, Collin Ferrell & Daniel Day Lewis!)
That was so cute! Thank you for posting that. The article was interesting, too. I actually can't stand Joel Stein (the writer), but Clooney really does seem like a man's man. I don't think most Hollywood guys know what a breaker box is. (Is that what it's called? ) I met George Clooney once. He was very charming and nice. (And then I untied him and let him go... just kidding!)

I'm so excited that people are finally getting familiar with Javier Bardem! I've been in love with him since Before Night Falls and have been hoping he'd break through in America. So talented. SO hot. If he and Penelope Cruz actually had babies, they would be a superior race and probably too sexy for the general public.

All members of the Academy have to be invited by the academy to join, with an invitation extended from the Board of Directors. Even though the list of members is not technically public knowledge, the Board of Directors is public and their press releases of who they have invited to join each year are.

This is what I found on the Academy's website
Quote:
Membership in the Academy is by invitation of the Board of Governors and is limited to those who have distinguished themselves in the arts and sciences of motion pictures. The criteria for admittance include: a body of work in motion pictures that reflects the high standards of the Academy, an achievement of unique distinction, or the making of an outstanding contribution to the film arts or sciences.
Members represent 15 general areas – actors, animators and short film makers, art directors and costume designers, cinematographers, composers and songwriters, documentary filmmakers, directors, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, producers, public relations specialists, sound technicians, visual effects experts and writers.

A candidate for membership in the Academy is normally sponsored by at least two members of the branch for which the person may qualify. Each proposed member must first receive the favorable endorsement of the appropriate branch executive committee before his or her name is submitted to the Board of Governors for its approval. Individuals nominated for Academy Awards® who are not already members of the Academy are considered for membership without the need for sponsors.
History of AMPAS-Page 2

The fact that there were 2 (count 'em 2) people that were willing to sponsor Gary Busey to enter the academy is comical, lol!

Anywho, on to more important things like Javier Bardem! I saw him in "The Dancer Upstairs" and totally fell in love with him.
I have to say too that I hope that they release "No Country for Old Men" soon to DVD. There are no theaters that are showing it right now and now that I finally have time to see it, I can't .

He didn't need a sponsor. Because he was nominated for best actor in 1978, he was automatically in. Plus, he didn't used to be as looney as he is now.

No Country for Old Men is scheduled for release on Netflix and Blockbuster on March 11.

For what movie? I can't remember? It wasn't the Buddy Holly story was it?

I used to like Busey, but he's gotten really strange as he's gotten older.

Yep, he was nominated for "The Buddy Holly Story" in '78. And yes, he is BEYOND strange, lol!
