I think the movie was two separate things -- the core of the story was about the consequences of lying. The secondary story was a brillant love story. A happy ending was appealing with regards to the love story angle. But I think a happy ending would have really weakened the power of the primary story of consequences. Based on that, I thought the end was perfect.
