Bridge to Terabithia

http://www.hollywood.com/

Jess Aarons is an outsider at school and even in his own family. Jess has trained all summer to become the fastest kid in his middle school class but his goal is unexpectedly thwarted by the new girl in school, Leslie Burke, who competes in the "boys only" race and wins. Despite their awkward introduction, the two outsiders quickly become best friends. Leslie loves to tell stories of fantasy and magic. Jess loves to draw, but until he met Leslie it was something he kept to himself. Leslie opens a new world of imagination for Jess. Together they create the secret kingdom of Terabithia, a magical place accessible by swinging on an old rope over a steam in the woods near their homes. There, the friends rule the kingdom, fight the Dark Master and his creatures and plot against the school bullies. Thanks to his friendship with Leslie, Jess is a changed for good.

I've read the book, and let me just tell you....the trailer looks like a totally different story.

The trailer made me mad! The book was so beautiful, but the trailer looks like some stupid fantasy movie! Arghh!

I'm thinking of taking my 9 year old Little Sister to this today for our 2 year anniversary. I've read the book, so I know the ending, but has anyone seen it who can tell me if it's too gut-wrenching in the movie? I understand they've enlarged the fantasy aspect (which is what you're seeing in the previews). I'm sure she'll have to read it eventually in school. All my kids did.

Gutmutter? Did you end up seeing the movie??

I'm waiting for someone to tell me how it was before I take Jordan.

I considered taking my 6 year old to this last weekend, but don't know if I'm ready to take her to a movie with this heavy of a theme. Spoiler alert, for those who haven't read the book: [[one of the kids dies in the book and the movie, rather unexpectedly. BTW my daughter has already lost a grandmother, so death isn't a "new" topic to her, but death of a child would be.]] Then we got over a foot of snow and going anywhere was off the table, but I'm curious as to others regarding how this would work for that age group.

I saw this with my 10 year old son and some of his friends. None of us had read the book, so based on the trailers, they were expecting a Narnia-type movie. Of course those of you who've read the book, know better. The twist at the end is incredibly sad. The other mom and I were crying like crazy and our sons felt disappointed that it wasn't the movie they thought they were seeing. The characters were really well done, and the actors were great. But if I had known more about the movie, I wouldn't have taken my son. It probably would work better for a girl.

Gutmutter, I think it's OK for a 9 year old (after all, we survived some pretty sad movies as a kid - remember Old Yeller?) but LG, age 6 might be too young.

My r-year-old would be devastated by a movie like this. She bursts into tears and runs crying from the room whenever she sees the "I'm a good dog" ad for Iams (or some such).

But from what I've read about the movie, it sounds like a great vehicle for conversation with the right kid. Mine is just unusually tender-hearted.

Jasmar, I know what you mean about that ad (I think it's for Pedigree - the one where they say, "I don't know what I did to be here and I just want to go home", right?) My son burst into tears at that ad when we saw it on our vacation. When we got home he donated all his savings to their animal adoption fund. Actually, that ad kills me too. We have two rescue dogs - if they weren't quite large dogs, we might have more.

I loved this book and movie! I cried in the movie and sooo knew what was going to happen. And I have to say that they did a great job casting the kids -- very similiar to how i pictured them
