The 2007 Razzie Nominees have been announced
Basic Instinct sequel, Wayans brothers flick top Razzie nominees
Sharon Stone's much maligned return in Basic Instinct 2 has received another dubious honour: tying with the Wayans brothers comedy Little Man for the most nominations for this year's Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies.
The so-called "dis-honourable" awards, which are typically announced the day before each year's Academy Awards gala, are a spoof of the Oscars and shine the spotlight on what organizers have deemed the worst films of the past year.
Basic Instinct 2, the box-office bomb in which Stone reprised the femme fatale role that made her famous, picked up seven Razzie nominations Monday, including worst picture and worst actress of the year.
Stone has previously won a worst actress Razzie for her turns in The Specialist and Intersection.
"She's what we call a Razzie repeat offender," said award founder John Wilson.
Shawn and Marlon Wayans shared a worst actor nomination for their comedy Little Man, in which a diminutive thief poses as a baby. The film was ultimately nominated seven times, with elder brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans also picking up a nod in the worst director category.
There was another family connection among the worst actress nominees, with sister singer-actresses Hilary and Haylie Duff sharing a nomination for their film Material Girls.
"We stuck the siblings together to allow room for more drek," Wilson said.
Key Razzie nominees include:
- Worst picture: Basic Instinct 2, Little Man, BloodRayne, Lady in the Water, The Wicker Man.
- Worst actress: Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct 2), Hilary and Haylie Duff (Material Girls), Lindsay Lohan (Just My Luck), Kristanna Loken (BloodRayne), Jessica Simpson (Employee of the Month).
- Worst actor: Shawn and Marlon Wayans (Little Man), Rob Schneider (Benchwarmers), Tim Allen (The Santa Clause 3, The Shaggy Dog, Zoom), Nicolas Cage (The Wicker Man), Daniel Lawrence Whitney (Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector).
Organizers also introduced a new category this year, with five films competing for the inaugural worst excuse for family entertainment title. The nominees are: Deck the Halls, Garfield: a Tail of Two Kitties, RV, The Santa Clause 3 and The Shaggy Dog.
Each year's Razzie nominees are decided by members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation across the U.S. and about a dozen other countries. More than 750 film professionals, movie journalists and film fans vote on each year's "winners."
Canadian comic actor Tom Green and Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry are among the past Razzie winners who chose to attend and accept the infamous award in person, each receiving a gold-spray-painted trophy depicting a jumbo-size raspberry sitting atop a mangled film reel.
The 27th annual Golden Raspberry Awards will be announced Feb. 24.
It's not really suprising when these movies get nominated for this 'award'. I like when the actors can have a sense of humour for their terrible roles as well. The sad thing is that several of these movies made top 10 or 5 when they were released and lasted for several weeks :laugh.
I always wind up seeing movies I really liked on the razzie list. Not every movie has to be pretentious. Some movies you love because they're fun. I loved "The Shaggy Dog" and "RV". "Benchwarmers" was one of the funniest movies I saw this year.
:yay My record stands. I have not seen a single Razzie nominated film in theatre this year, making it 46 years in a row.
