We saw Borat this weekend and found it to be hilarious (particularly the quite revolting wrestling scene - ha, still laughing), and neither of us thought that anyone had particularly been exploited. If you're a jackass, you're a jackass, and that's your own fault - not the filmmakers. And we actually found that his treatment of the prostitute Luenelle to be particularly respectful and I really appreciated that. And the only people that I thought might have had any grounds whatsoever to sue are the actual people of Kazakhstan, though I did notice the disclaimer at the end letting the Western world know that the Kazakhstanies are not all that he claimed they were.

Sorry to disappoint you but I read that she was an actress hired for the role.

I am disappointed. I was really hoping that I was seeing someone not treat a working girl like they were less than human.

And the lawsuits continue:

"Borat" lawsuit takes aim at forthcoming DVD
Thu Dec 7, 2006 5:18pm ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles judge on Thursday said he would consider a request by two U.S. college students to have a scene cut from the hit movie "Borat" that shows them guzzling alcohol and making racist remarks.

In a lawsuit originally thrown out a month ago and now aimed at DVD sales, the fraternity brothers said they were tricked into appearing in the film and that including the scene on the forthcoming DVD would harm their chances of finding work.

One of the South Carolina students has already had to resign from a prominent position in his fraternity and another lost a "very prestigious internship," their lawyer said.

"Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" stars British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as a television journalist from Central Asia whose boorish sensibilities clash with ordinary Americans he meets on a road trip.

The two men, whose names are not used in court papers to protect them from "additional and unnecessary embarrassment," appear in a drunken interview in which they watch a sex tape and make racist remarks about slavery and minorities in the United States.

They said they were taken to a bar to "loosen up" before filming and never expected the movie to be shown in the United States. The pair are seeking unspecified damages and footage involving them removed from the DVD.

West Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joseph Biderman did not say when he would issue a ruling.

The film's distributor, 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp., has described the lawsuit as "without merit."

Oliver Tailleiu, lawyer for the fraternity brothers, said the judge was "very engaged. Hopefully he sees it our way."

"Borat," which has grossed more than $110 million at the North American box office, has sparked a number of complaints and lawsuits including one from residents of a Romanian village who said they were depicted as rapists and thieves.

TWO BIG Golden Globe noms.

Best Freaking Picture folks. Which it will lose to Dreamgirls, but that's STILL huge news for a film of this type.

And Best Actor. Sasha Baron Cohen will have to take down the likes of extreme Hollywood-popular types like Will Ferrill and Johnny Depp, but... I think its far more possible than the film itself winning.

It may have gotten some technical award categories as well, but the two mentioned above are pretty huge.

Gosh, gee whiz, people actually think our behavior is disgusting and won't hire us if they find out we do it? Maybe we should stop doing it?

Had to bump this thread. I finally saw Borat tonight and... whoa! I don't remember every laughing that hard in a movie, ever. Mostly with disbelief that he had the nerve to pull off some of the stuff he did. Now I know what all the fuss was about!

I've finally seen it and I thought it was pretty good. I was a little surprised by how the movie played out and I'm not really sure how I thought it would, but it was different. I'm pretty amazed at what they got away with and with what they could do without being arrested!

I rented it this weekend too! Not only did I LOVE the movie, but I was thoroughly entertained by the way they did the DVD to have the look and feel that it did, with the features and what not. The features are limited, but very definitely worth watching - some quite funny deleted scenes from the movie.
