Haven't seen "Far From Heaven", but have heard Moore is superb. I'd be happy with anyone from Moore/Kidman/Zellwegger. Would love to see Ed Harris win, as he's such a good actor, but I've heard that Cooper is pretty much a shoo-in. As I said above, the fact that Streep didn't get a nom for "The Hours" as Lead Actress should solidify her win in Supporting Actress. I'm not a huge CZJ fan, either, but I've heard she does an incredible job in "Chicago". In fact, there was some talk that she might have been put in the Lead Actress category w/ Zellwegger instead. I'm glad they didn't do that. Scorsese is LONG overdue. | ||

| I agree with Miss F about the academy adoring Nicole. I think she stands a good chance. I know what you mean about musicls Lobes, if there were more produced I imagine the academy would prefer to give them a seperate category. I can't see past Chris Cooper for the supporting actor either really.

I was delighted to see my man Ed Harris on the list! I hope he wins. John C. Reilly was very good in Chicago, though. His "Mr. Cellophane" song was terrific. Can't believe Chicago got 13 nominations. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was so much better than any of the other, uh, three movies I've seen that were released this year. ![]()

| Diane Lane looks like a strong dark horse contender in the Best Actress category. Her movie was released much earlier in the year than most of the other contenders, which means her performance naturally stood out more. In addition, she's been around Hollywood for a long time and hasn't been so honored before. The Academy sometimes awards Best Actor/Actress awards as de facto "lifetime achievement" awards. That being said, I'd say Zellweger is probably the leading contender at this point. She really did a great job in Chicago. There was a part where she was supposed to be a ventriloquist's dummy, and she was absolutely incredible.

| I really like Diane Lane. I think she was excellent in Unfaithful but I just can't see her getting the nod. It would be a shame for Moore to be nominated twice and not get either, but I can't see her beating out Streep.

| My guess is that Lane, Hayek, and Streep were up for the 2 final slots in the Best Actress category, and Lane and Hayek won. Lane was excellent in Unfaithful, and she has won a couple of critics' awards for the performance, so a win wouldn't be a total shock. It would be a bit of a surprise, though (IMHO). | |

| The Academy loves to surprise with the acting awards. And they like picking one movie to dominate all the other categories. Worst example of all time: The English Patient. No earthly reason that film should have generated such an avalance of Oscars.

Agreed, Lobester. Titanic is another perfect example. As for The English Patient, I can see people maybe liking it, but do you really think it warranted that raft of Oscars? Maybe it was a weak year for movies or something, but I think the voters just got lazy and mailed it in.
