Russell Crowe Arraigned in Court in NYC

Ahhh, it's Monday in New York City, so it must be celebrity arrest or arraignment day. Last week was Christian Slater's turn. Today we have Russell Crowe being arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of second degree assault and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon. It seems he reached out and touched because he couldn't reach out and touch.

This guy needs to get together with Naomi Campbell and get a group discount on lots and lots of anger management courses.

Crowe arrives last Wednesday for the New York premiere of "Cinderella Man."

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Actor Russell Crowe was arraigned Monday afternoon in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of second degree assault and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly throwing a hotel telephone that struck a hotel employee in the face.

According to the criminal complaint accompanying the charges, Crowe admitted to the arresting police officer that he picked up the phone and threw it at the Mercer Hotel concierge "because he was angry," the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said.

NYPD Sgt. Michael Wysokowski earlier told CNN that Crowe "was upset because he couldn't get a call out to Australia."

Police said the victim was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital. Crowe was booked into the First Precinct and later escorted out, wearing handcuffs and sunglasses, for his arraignment.

His next court appearance was set for Sept. 14, the D.A.'s office said.

Universal Studios -- which released Crowe's latest film, "Cinderella Man" -- said it had "no comment" on the incident.

CNN has been unable, so far, to reach the actor's publicist, Robin Baum, or his attorney, Gerald Lefcourt.

Crowe was in New York promoting "Cinderella Man," a biopic based on the life of world heavyweight champ James J. Braddock, which opened in theaters last weekend.

According to Nielsen the movie ranked fourth place in theaters and grossed $18.6 million.

Crowe won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2001 for his movie "Gladiator."

Wasn't it Russell Crowe who was caught on a night club's security camera getting into a barroom type brawl?

Either way.. what a total jerk-off to whip a phone at someone who has NO control over the telephone lines.

When the guy bent over, or "reacted" to the assault...by..bleeding.. I wonder what Russell did? Yell at him some more?

It sure was, Mav... I remember seeing that when they kept playing it a couple of years ago when Crowe was in trouble over that. That one happened in Australia, and Crowe was sued by someone he hit.

And then, of course, there was the time he slammed the reporter against a wall in England because he didn't like the question about Crowe not winning an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind.

Crowe's just a roving international ambassador of good will, eh?

I don't know...I'm not questioning that these incidents happened, but someone I know worked with Russell Crowe, and whenever I hear these "bad boy" new stories, it runs totally contrary to the first-hand reports I have heard, that he is very down-to-earth, and an extremely nice, normal guy. I don't know what to believe.

Well, I'm sure he is extremely nice and considerate when everything is going his way.

In interviews, Crowe himself has made reference to his temper, and has admitted himself some of the incidents, such as the thing with the British producer of BAFTA, who he slammed against a wall and cussed out. He also admitted the Australian bar brawl incident, but laughed it off saying "we all get a few too many pints in us now and then". In the wake of all the negative publicity from the BAFTA incident, Crowe even issued an apology to the producer (Gerrie) for doing what he did, and admitting he did curse him out and slam him against the wall.

And the other incidents have been public, with many witnesses. To his credit, at least Crowe doesn't bother to deny them, in fact he seems to relish his image. So there's no doubt at all that these things have happened. And as Mav said, I'm sure he's just a jolly lil angel when things are going his way and people are kissing his behind. Unfortunately, there is the other side of him that isn't very angelic.

This just adds to the many reasons why I've never really liked the guy ... But somehow he still seems to score nice movie deals so I guess there's not much punishment for his actions (except a thinner wallet and a thicker police record... :-))
