Anybody else more impressed with last years movies?

But, the nominations look about right ... except for 'Shark Tales' getting a nomination. BLAGH!

    What about Motorcycle Diaries?

    Don Cheadle - HOTEL RWANDA
    Johnny Depp - FINDING NEVERLAND
    Leonardo DiCaprio - THE AVIATOR
Clint Eastwood - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
    Jamie Foxx - RAY
I am surprised about Clint Eastwood getting a nom for best actor over Sideway's Paul Giamatti.

This year has been interesting with the breakout of many mid-sized productions. Overall, I think the awards look decent. (Last year, no. I thought the LOTR sweeps were ridiculous.) At least we know there'll be no A Beautiful Mind winning this year.

Of the nominated movies, I've only seen: Finding Neverland, Sideways, Million Dollar Baby, Closer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Troy (), A Very Long Engagement, Shrek 2 (in Polish, which I barely understand), Super Size Me, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Kinsey, and The Motorcycle Diaries. We don't get very many good movies where I go to school, so I don't feel prepared to comment, but...

Here are my other picks, based on what I've seen:
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE - Clint Eastwood - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - Clive Owen - CLOSER
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE - Hilary Swank - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - Natalie Portman - CLOSER
ART DIRECTION & CINEMATOGRAPHY - A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT (But I want to see House of Flying Daggers.)
COSTUME DESIGN - TROY (No, my Classics professor was fairly impressed...)
    DIRECTING - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE - I heard Michael Moore forfeted his spot? Super Size Me was only okay. I want to see Weeping Camel.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - I haven't seen any of these! How embarassing!
BEST PICTURE - SIDEWAYS, I guess...

Vera Drake is coming to the art house in a few weeks, but otherwise I have to wait for the DVDs.

ETA: AIWANNABE, I am also surprised by the absence of Motorcycle Diaries. Have you seen the others?

I havn't, but I did see Motorcycle which was high on a lot of critics top 10 lists for 2004.

As usual, the globes have way too much of an impact/influence on who gets nominated for Oscars.

Me, too, AI. I adore Paul Giamatti! He deserved the nomination.

Glad to see Supersize Me nominated for documentary! Yay Morgan!

Edited: Hee! Didn't see ya there, Lobeck, ya mind-reader! Hey, and thanks for listing all the nominations!

Thanks for that list lobeck! What a coup for Jamie Foxx to be nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. And Michael Moore is nowhere to be seen.

I know! And he refused to be placed in as a documentary because he had already won one. His movie got a couple of Razzie nominations at least.
