LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Gary Oldman is in negotiations to join the cast of Warner Bros. Pictures' "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" for director Alfonso Cuaron.

The third installment of the studio's franchise based on author J.K. Rowling's book series will begin production Feb. 17. Oldman would play wizard Sirius Black, the escaped prisoner of Azkaban who is later revealed to be Harry Potter's godfather.

Adapted by Steven Kloves, "Azkaban" is being produced by Chris Columbus, David Heyman and Mark Radcliffe. Michael Barnathan and Callum McDougall are executive producing.

Oldman, repped by CAA, ICM London and manager Douglas Urbanski, will next star in a trio of indie features: "Sin," opposite Ving Rhames, "Tiptoes" with Kate Beckinsale and "Interstate 60."

    I love Gary Oldman.
He really is the man of a thousand faces.
I hope they can come to an agreement and he'll be in the movie.

But who is going to be Dumbledore now that Richard Harris is dead???

My vote is for Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard on Star Trek).

Originally we heard it was gpoing to be Ian McKellern, but that soon changed to Michael Gambon.
The last I heard Gambon was supposed to be doing it.

I saw a tidbit on the IMDB news that Harris' family is publicly "calling" for the role to be given to Peter O'Toole. He'd be fine, too I suppose, but when I read it I just saw Patrick Stewart playing Dumbledore. He's a little more ... vital than the others.

Okay, I think he's a god. I want to have his love child.

    *cough*Trekkie*cough*

Peter O'Toole always makes me think it's a porn name. I'm bad.

I don't know who Michael Gambon is off the top of my head, but I know the name. I know there was some discussion of Christopher Lee, too.

TrekkER, thank you and proud of it!

I like Christopher Lee, but I think it would be too confusing to have him be the wizard in two major movie series that keep opening episodes at the same time. So many similarities between Harry Potter and LOTR:

    Dumbledore Gandalf
    Harry Frodo
    Dobby Gollum
    Whomping Willow Ents
Invisibility cloak Ring which causes invisibility

I love them both, but they're starting to blurr together in my brain!

Peter O'Toole is definitely a good porn name! That makes me think of the game "What's your Stripper Name?"

    Think I'll start a thread...

Michael Gambon is probably best known to British people as "The Singing Detective".
This was a rather surreal tv show written by Dennis Potter.

I had to go to imdb to find something that I thought the non-Brits (which is practically everyone apart from me ) would ahve seen him in.

He really is a great actor imo, he's a "Sir" now too.

The movies I think people here are most likely to have seen him in are,

Gosford Park (2001) .... Sir William McCordle
Sleepy Hollow (1999) .... Baltus Van Tassel
Insider, The (1999) .... Thomas Sandefur
