The Blind Swordsman: Zatôichi (2003), directed by and starring the phenomenal "Beat" Takeshi (better known for his yakuza gangster flicks) is a samurai sword fighting classic for the new millenium. Zatôichi is one of the most popular and legendary characters in Japanese culture, and Takeshi's new version of the 19th century blind masseuse/gambler/swordsman kicks major ass!

I recommend this highly if you are a fan of Japanese and/or action films. The fighting sequences are amazing, and the special effects, breathtaking. Even the blood comes alive, and I read in somewhere that Takeshi had expressly wanted the blood to "look like flowers blossoming across the screen."

I'll check it out, SnowflakeGirl.

My recent videos have been B&W classics. Kurosawa's Ikiru (**** stars), Ozu's Tokyo Story (*****), and John Ford's Grapes of Wrath (****). Try not shedding a tear watching those three. I couldn't.

Well, I didn't rent it, I bought it - Elf - I am a hugh Will Farrell fan - and I thought it was pretty funny for a PG movie. When he got to New York and started waiving at a man that was hailing a cab! It's so simple, but Will Farrell just has that certain something that makes the simplest of things funny!

A couple of movies I saw over the last 2 weeks..

School of Rock - Not a bad little flick. If you're a fan of Jack Black's, you should check this one out. He's great in it, and the kids were great as well.

Scary Movie 3 - I actually enjoyed the 3rd one, it had spoofs of some of my favorite scary films ( The Others, The Ring, Signs) .

House of Sand and Fog, ****
Movies like this are the reason I watch movies. Great story, great acting and great pacing. It grabbed my attention without letting go. The story and characters feel so real, it's hard to believe it wasn't based on a true story. Also, Kingsley should've won the Oscar. Not Penn.

I was able to get it through Netflix, Zhora. Do seek it out, we enjoyed it very much.

Well this week, we got The Saddest Music in the World, with the incomparable Isabella Rossellini and Mark McKinney (remember him from Kids in the Hall?). Now, we have a very split decision this one--my husband hated it, and while it was, granted, a bit of a precious art flick, I loved it. The premise is this: a rich millionairess amputee and beer company owner in Winnipeg in the middle of the Great Depression (have I lost you yet? ) decides to hold a contest to give $25,000 to anyone who can play the saddest music in the world. It's shot using old-fashioned, grainy, black & white, silent-film-era photography, a technique I enjoyed in this director's other film Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary. Hubby just thought it was strange. In my opinion, it was strange, sad, symbolic and hauntingly beautiful.

Anyway, our tastes aren't always so disparate. We love Alias and thanks to the magic of DVD technology, we're all caught up on our Season 3 and are ready for the new season in January.

I loved the Saddest Music, but I'm originally from Winnipeg so slightly biased.
