I agree with the Matrix. Remarkable scenes in that film.

I would also throw in a vote for Lethal Weapon...only the first one though. Joe Pesci and Chris Rock are like adding garlic to chocolate chip cookie dough...it just ain't helpin'

God, how could we have missed Lethal Weapon???????

How about Star Wars? I realize it's Sci Fi, but things did get blown up

    Mad Max, also quite good.

Star Wars I (or is it Episode IV now) was definately an action film, and obviously ground breaking.

Star Wars (the first one) belongs on the list. And Lethal Weapon. I saw your first post on that matter, Modesty. I couldn't remember much of it, but I do remember lots of explosions. That passes the Wayner Litmus Test for Action.
When you're ten years old and a car drives by and splashes a puddle of water all over you, it's hard to decide if you should go to school like that or try to go home and change and probably be late. So while he was trying to decide, I drove by and splashed him again. - Jack Handey

I should have properly credited you with the suggestion Modesty. You have my apologies.

    I would add Mad Max.

My comment wasn't intended that way - no apology needed , but thanks anyway .
OK - I'll add Max Max (or does that one really belong to the
"offbeat movie list"?? or maybe both??) Ah well - who cares, it's just a game .

You might be right about Mad Max being a qualifier for off-beat as well.

I know you didn't need the apology, but you did deserve the credit ;-)
