Saving Private Ryan is probably my 2nd fav....that movie is amazing. I also enjoyed The Lion in Winter, and it lost to Oliver in 1968....still can't believe that one.

FD, TLIW is a good movie, but I have to say that I love Oliver!

Oh, and a small correction...Driving Miss Daisy did win Best Picture. But it wasn't even nominated for Best Director. What, the Best Picture winner directed itself?

Sepia...The Color Purple is one of my all time faaavorite movies!!!

And so is Shawshank Redemption. LOVE that movie. Love it. Every time it's on TV I have to sit and watch it through no matter where they are in the movie.

I agree with Shawshank Redemption. Forrest Gump wasn't even the second-best movie nominated that year. I thought Pulp Fiction was a better flick than Gump, but I know I may be in the minority with that opinion.

Saving Private Ryan is another excellent choice.

And the first Academy Award travesty that I actually got mad about (when I was 11 years old): Raiders of the Lost Ark losing to Chariots of Fire. I do like Chariots, but no way is it a better movie than Raiders.

My favorite movie of all time are Paper Moon (not best pic but it was nominated for something... I think two actresses were nominated for Best Supperting Actress), About A Boy, and Interview with a Vampire.

I have to agree with you about the interplanetary nature of the Oscar voters. I LOVED Apocalypse Now. What an amazing film for 1979, and not a winner. The previous year? The Deer Hunter...Oscar winner and steaming pile of dog doo.

Films with vision and daring almost always get passed over for films that are more accessible, filled with uplifting/"serious" messages, or have a reputable pedigree (think "Gladiator", "A Beautiful Mind", "Gandhi", "The Hours"...) The voters at the Oscars are quite myopic, in this regard.

ROBBED

"Citizen Kane" getting knocked out by "How Green Was My Valley"

And, since nobody mentioned this one...

Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" losing Best Director Oscar to "Oliver!", and isn't even nominated for Best Picture.

Somebody mentioned the travesty of the 1968 Academy Awards. In my opinion, "Oliver!" is pure entertaining fluff, wasn't even in the same *class* as half of the films nominated; "The Lion in Winter" is an excellent film, with brilliant performances from Hepburn and O'Toole, but...I think most will agree w/ me when I say "2001: A Space Odyssey" is both a directorial and cinemagraphic masterpiece. There's just no comparison.

Since I'm on the topic of Kubrick films, here's another one...

1964. "Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" beaten by "My Fair Lady" for Best Picture AND Best Director.

*Sigh*. Yes, I love "My Fair Lady", Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn, and Bernard Shaw. But c'mon - we're talking about the *best* films, supposedly landmark films, etc. If I had my way, the Oscars would always go to the most innovative and difficult contenders.

That way, at least decades down the line, people would still have heard of them.
