Psycho, Rear Window and Vertigo are generally considered his best. But if you want something more immediately entertaining, skip those and go straight to "North by Northwest," "Strangers in the Train" and "Rebecca." "Northwest" has everything working for it. Witty dialogue. Star acting. Cool photography. Fast-paced action. It might remind you of a certain spy movie-series from the 60s. "Strangers" is a more straightforward, edge-of-your-seat thriller. The way he uses the camera to heighten the suspense is Hitchcock at his innovative best. The plot is a bit out there, but stay with it. The ending is like rollercoaster ride. Some say Rebecca is an imperfect classic because it looks like a soapy, 40s romance and the ending tries to tie too many loose ends. But the acting is strong. Joan Fontaine is absolutely convincing (and beautiful) as the damsel in distress. The film looks gorgeous and is probably Hitchcock's most atmospheric film.

Recently, I've seen "Dial M for Murder" and "Foreign Correspondent," both highly entertaining films. But see the films I mentioned above first.

Oh My Gawd. I saw this and had nightmares for months, too. I've never known anyone else who has seen this show. I think you're right, too. It was part of a trilogy show on tv. I sort of recall it was introduced by Rod Sterling? I remember that little voodoo guy racing around the woman's apartment with that spear, slicing at her. Ack! It really freaked me out.

I remember this much about that show. It stared Karen Black, and I think CAT was somewhere in the title. It scared me too.

Wow, everyone has some really good choices.

"The Entity?" THAT was a scary movie.

And although not a horror movie, I had nightmares for a long time from "When A Stranger Calls" - The babysitter movie where the caller taunts the babysitter by asking "Have you checked the children?".

"The Omen" was pretty scary in some parts too

I've seen all the movies on that list, and liked all of them. While The Exorcist is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, I definitely think The Shining is a faaar superior movie. It so deserves the number one spot.

Does Se7en really qualify as a horror film though? It's scary enough, but I've always labeled it as a thriller. Same with Silence of the Lambs. Both excellent movies, though.

You read my mind chesara! These movies scared the crap out of me, especially When a Stranger Calls. It was the very reason I didn't babysit until my adult years!

The Shining scared me as a child but not now, at all. Halloween still gives me the shivers even though I know what's going to happen.

I like a good horror film once and while. It provides a break from watching all the arty stuff I usually watch. Here are some I've seen in the last year...

The Beyond (1981), ***½, A great looking zombie flick from the 80s.
Black Sunday (1960), ***½, Classic gothic horror.
Curse of the Demon Night (1958), ****, An old fashion monster movie. I'm a sucker for the B&W photography.
Tenebre (1982), ***½
Suspiria (1977), ****, Extremely arty, which is why it's my favourite. A perfect introduction to Dario Argento.
Deep Red (1975), ***½
Evil Dead, ****
The Howling (1981), ***½
Frankenfish, **½
Eyes without a face (1959), ****½, Not scary, but frightening!
Ringu, **, I didn't like the slow pacing.
Psycho, ****
Saw, **½, Worth a rental. You could do worse.

The ratings are based on my personal enjoyment of the film. Not necessarily on how scary the film is.
