| i like this movie, but was puzzled at the end, too. i remember thinking that maybe the daughter wasn't actually there: charlotte rampling's character was jealous that the man wasn't coming to france with her, she had writer's block, she was repressed, she created this almost caricatured girl who "carried" all of that split-off sexual energy, but when she started to acknowledge that sexual/creative energy, she didn't need that version of the daughter any more. i thought this both as the movie progressed and because of something in the end, when she encountered the daughter at the office and it was a sweet, english girl who didn't recognize her, but i can't remeber the small but important detail. maybe it was something about that daughter was supposed to have been in france, and the father or the secretary was surprised that she showed up at the office?... the whole story of the vixenish daughter's mother seemed suspect to me, too. but i could be way, way, way off... |
