    Just out of curiosity -

Has anyone here ever attempted stand up? If so I'd be interested to hear experiences..

I haven't done stand-up comedy per se, but I have been in a couple of humorous speech contests.

Pretty much. The speech has to be about something - it has to have a definite point or theme to it. Basically, the humor in the speech is supposed to underscore the point that you're making. Here's the ballot that they use:

    Humorous Speech Contest Judges Guidelines

(The contests are in Toastmasters, by the way, and the speeches are 5-7 minutes in length.)

So if some guy got up and told a string of unrelated jokes in one of these contests, he might get some laughs, but the judges would ding him for not having any structure to his speech.

    That sounds tough, Dr. M.

I've never tried stand up and honestly think it would be one of the hardest jobs!
