My servers would slit Billy's throat for taking tips. That isn't cool at all. Tip sharing with bussers, bartenders, etc. is fine but a manager has no right to share in the tips.
ETA If I ever get a tip I give it to my cooks.

Wow, that guy doesn't deserve to be manager. All he does is bark at the waiters to do this and that and then he steals half their tips. Jerk!

Back in the day waiters in fine dining establishments would give part of their tips to the maître d' to work in the better restaurants. It was a form of payola to get to work in the high $ establishments to make more tip money.

Arena football players don't make much money. We used to give gift certificates to our restaurants to our local team in exchange for 2 seasons tickets. They gave them to the players to use.

Cruise ships always want you to tip the maitre'd...which I do. But I always make sure the waiter I had for the cruise gets a separate tip as well. I've only been on one, but on the "formal" night since I had taken the time to talk to my server my husband almost fainted when he brought my lobster. It was at least 1.5 times bigger than his other tables. It pays to be nice to the servers
