Re: 7/08 Season Finale Discussion Thread ***SPOILERS***

Well it was not much of a surprise but congrats to Christina

I agree...why do the "return to help" contestants act so horribly??? Jen needs more than a job recomendation haha

I liked a few of the characters this season but it is a pretty boring show, Gordon swearing and predictable dishes and screwups...no real standouts this season IMHO. The food on Top Chef is a lot more interesting.

Thank heavens for dvr's...that is the only way I watch this show, pretty much on fast forward

I saw the ad for it while watching this season on CityTV, so presumably it will air on City.

But wouldn't the winner be cooking whatever Gordon Ramsay's menu choices are at the West Hollywood? It's Ramsay's restaurant after all - his dishes, his designs etc. How much leeway do his chefs get in creating dishes that make it onto the menu anyway?

I was glad Christina won though I did feel bad for Petrozza. He's a nice guy. Christina's mom looked utterly shocked that she was the winner.

The host is Marco Pierre White who is a well-known chef. I don't know if he is Ramsay's mentor. Maybe he was at one point but they've very publicly feuded in the past. It has B-list British celebrities cooking so it's not a competition for real chefs. More information on Citytv's website here: Citytv | Hell's Kitchen

Has to be the contestant's responsibility, there is no way a kitchen of that size, serving so many people should run out of ingredients.

Final 2 contestants should be responsible, they want to win. They cannot, should not count on anyone else to make sure everything is well stocked.

Jen was so annoying last night, her complaining, her voice, attitude all suck. Jen purposely screwed up the onion rings, delaying them being ready

Matt is an idiot, he can't get anything done and gets all bent out of shape

There are really two answers to that question. If, in fact, the winner were to be rewarded with the position of Executive Chef as advertised, they would have tremendous input into the design of the menu. Take, for example, a celebrity chef like Emeril. Although it is Emeril's restaurant and the menu is comprised mostly of his recipes, the Executive Chef in each restaurant is encouraged to come up with their own recipes which are submitted to Emeril for possible inclusion on the menu. And, in order to keep the restaurants fresh, and keep the Executive Chefs inspired, those dishes often appear on the menu right alongside Emeril's dishes. Also, the Executive Chef has tremendous input, if not total control, of the daily specials. (It should be noted that nothing would be served in Emeril's restaurant without his express permission)

If, however, the winner receives the more likely position of Executive Sous Chef, they will have very little to do with anything. They will, as have prior winners, be set up in a visible position in the kitchen where they can be seen by the fans. They will sign autographs, and live out their one year contract. Then, at the end of the year, they will be offered a new contract with a salary so low they will leave the restaurant and disappear into obscurity.

It is very common for a kitchen to 86 a dish on the menu. Remember, this is not an established restaurant. Basically, each menu item is a 'special'. Because no one has ever served the dishes on a regular basis, there is no way of knowing how popular any given dish is going to be. Go to any high-end restaurant towards the end of service and you'll see numerous 'specials' 86'd.

Restaurants don't like to over prepare ingredients like lobster. Throwing away something as expensive as lobster at the end of service is a bad thing. So, they guess how many of the Lobster Strudels they will be serving and prep for that number. If they guess wrong, well, that's part of the game. Better to not have enough than to throw away money. As to the cheese for the salad, that was all Jen. Cheese can go back into the fridge for the next day, so there was no excuse to not have enough cheese on hand. But, then again, we're talking about Jen. "Do as little work as possible" Jen!

Re: 7/08 Season Finale Discussion Thread ***SPOILERS***

Obviously Ramsay has never heard of American employment laws that protect people over 40. He says he picked the girl because she had the most "potential" and "longevity," which is a way of saying he didn't want a mature candidate for the position. That is against the law. They made the law because it is such a common occurrence. Whatever words they use, age discrimination is what it boils down to.

Heh the only reason "Jen the Monster" was returned to the show is because the producers are sadists and they think we all are masochists, hehe.
