I don't like him for Danny, and agree with Krom (paraphrasing) he seems plastic.

Interestingly ... the real people of whom Grease's Danny is a composite, had lighter hair, but most people see him as dark and Travolta.

As for the roughness ... it must be clear in the portrayal, that Danny is a lot of bark, but really a puppy. Think Fonzie in Happy Day's if you will.

I don't watch this show but in the picture he's cute...and he likes Jennifer Hudson so he gets some brownie points with me for that one!

I like Austin. Judging by the performances so far, he should be Danny. But with his Broadway experience, he's the obvious frontrunner, so the judges may try to steer the voting towards one of the less experienced actors to create "drama."

Speaking of which, they said America chooses the winner...but how does it work? Will it be like "American Idol"?

With due respect, I don't see a realistic Danny liking Jennifer Hudson. Mind you I do, but I'm no Danny.

A real Danny in the 1950s would tend to like Elvis. Maybe Jerry Lee Lewis or if he was a real rebel, a black artist or two.

A contemporary Danny would probably be into hard rock, or maybe even rap. Not that this would be what he'd sing in the musical bits, what I mean is that the ATTITUDE would be that of a punk kid.

In essence, what's wrong with Austin is that he comes off as the Danny who likes showtunes. Even if he's busy SINGING showtunes, Danny can't come off as someone who LISTENS to them.

Any of them could like Barney songs for all I care. If he's a good enough actor, his personal musical tastes won't come across in the role he's playing. Good actors can be gay and play straight roles and vice versa; they can be punks and play the good boy next door; or they can be lotharios and play pious priests. Now bad actors... Anyhow, we haven't really seen any of them act enough yet (other than a couple lines) to see what they can do. If he, as Danny, comes across as liking show tunes, then yes, that could be problematic. But I doubt that'll happen.

I've seen "Grease" a million times on stage and it's not that complicated a play, no matter how Jim Jacobs tries to talk it up. There wasn't that much difficult dancing and the singing is simple enough that you don't have to be the best singer to tackle them (though it certainly would help). What you need on stage are larger than life presences who resonate to the balconies. So far, Austin does that (probably BECAUSE he's a natural ham). Who cares if he's smarmy as a person? I still think he'd be good on stage in these type of roles.

I finally got an episode of this and I have to admit that I was not on the "Austin train" I thought he was ok, but I didn't really see why he was considered the front runner on these threads. He is so feminine looking to me, i have a hard time picturing him as Danny. Maybe he can act tough, but right now he is just a little too "eh" to me.

He sings well enough, has enough sass to be Danny. He's okay not bad.

Yuck. I thought I liked Austin at first, but he is super-cheesy. He moves like a Chippendales dancer.
