    Re: Gripes about reality shows

Idol needs a total re-haul starting with getting rid of theme nights
If a singer wants to sing their own songs let them, let them do their best every week, ifs it pop, rock, blues, or even Broadway I don't care, if thats the kind of idol they want to be then thats what i want to hear from them just stop making them sing songs from before they were born and from artists they may never have heard of
As soon as the competition is over they go on to sing the music they want to sing and thats what I would like to hear so that I can decide if IMO I think they have talent in that area, how many poor sods have been eliminated after disco night because they were terrible in singing a genre of music that no longer exists and I know they can change it to suit their own style but that is not always successful and they still get a limited song choice, admittedly it has given us some truly funny moments and memorable disasters
If you truly want to see who sings better then just have them all sing the same song
Ok sorry but there are so many things wrong with Idol at the moment and I wish it had evolved more than it has, just having judges who would be honest in their critique would be a nice change

The Voice, I so wish they would give the public a vote on the battle rounds, there has been so many singers eliminated in the battle rounds that I thought were much better than some of the ones who succeeded and its usually due to the match up. They put two really good people up against each other sometimes leaving two mediocre people and one of them will go through but had they been up against one of the others they would not have and I am some times really unsure of why the judges choose the person they do especially when the one they sent home can be audibly better than the other person. Maybe the battle rounds need to be blind as well so the judges can not tell who was who, I don't know, but I just can not watch the battle rounds anymore, I find them too frustrating
The song choice in the battle rounds is sometimes more suited to one of the singers and not the other so I wish they would find a better way to do it

Recently I watched the first season of Survivor while at the gym, it was really interesting to go back to the beginning after so many years. The first thing I noticed, there was not one waitress/waiter or pharmaceutical salesperson, (code for actor/actress) all the contestants had real jobs and none of them came out looking like skelators as they were all normal weight going in and not ultra skinny from day one. It was actually refreshing to watch and I wish they would go back to finding normal people with no ulterior motives to play the game

But the only way to solve my biggest Reality TV gripe would be to completely wipe out the Kardasians and all their spin offs from TVs everywhere

Lol I must be the only one in America that has no problem with the Kardashians. They don't bug me at all. I like them all except for Scott Disick.lol

The show that bugs me is the Bachelor. It's like an auction with women not seeking a man, but fame.

I really enjoy the So You Think You Can Dance auditions because while we do hear the back stories aka sob stories you can see how all the folks over came what ever "stuff" happened in their lives. I find it so overwhelming positive.

PS: the producers also don't hit the viewing audience constantly with the contestants "sob" stories which really makes a huge difference in how I view the show the emphasis is on the dancing.

Some people I know don't like the audition portions of talent reality shows since they believe that the rejects are publicly humiliated, and in their words, dehumanized and demoralized.

I do think that SYTYCD does handle to audition part differently but there are always those folks who audition that shouldn't and they don't get why. I have seen several American Idol auditions that were terrible and the folks doing the auditions are delusional as far as how talented they think they are.

    Re: Gripes about reality shows

My problem with it is now people use these shows as a way to tout themselves as "I'm better than you."

I hate these "reality" shows that should just be "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" (Kardashians, "Real Housewives", well pretty much ANY show of any family). So what? - The Kardashians really got into gear because Kim made a porn video, the "real" housewives are anything but, and don't get me started on "Honey Boo Boo" or most of the We TV reality shows.

I also don't like people attempting to use reality TV to vindicate themselves from criticism. A great example of this is the season finale of "Kitchen Nightmares" with Amy's Baking Company... (it's a long name that has "salad" misspelled on their banner as Saladas). Amy and Samy say in the actual episode they wanted Ramsay to counter the critics on their food, but they find out that he's agreeing with them. Amy further shows this implication when she tells Ramsay that she doesn't want them to film the show anymore because he's being critical of them. It's like "Hello, you SIGNED UP for this, you knew what you were getting yourselves into - or you have a complete lack of understanding of the word 'Nightmares'".

Like most of you, I don't like reality shows that focus on sob stories. Too many people advancing in these shows who do so on that over talent.

I also don't like these out of the blue saves/excuses for contestants they are leaning toward winning the season. Examples of this have been the last two seasons of "Project Runway" where Michelle and Anthony Ryan were saved in their seasons (last season and All-Stars 2 respectively).

Now, Michelle's case she made something nice but it wasn't what the client (Nina) wanted, but I still maintain that they should've just eliminated Patricia right then if her outfit was actually weaker (their viewpoint).

Anthony Ryan was declared safe over Emilio when he designed a dress that a concussed gnat in rudimentary sewing could've designed better. I mean he just basically wrapped the girl in a couple of yards of fabric, added an unnecessary V collar and then a belt. Emilio at least made a dress that looked like a dress, even if safe. They pulled out the "both are safe" card when it was blatantly obvious they had pegged AR for the title when they saved him with that beyond ugly dress.

I may not have liked the winner of "Project Accessory" - I found his skills at my level and I'm a third year fused glass maker - but at least he did win all on his little ole lonesome.

    Re: Gripes about reality shows

It's been a while since I posted in this thread and I have more gripes to add.

Foreshadowing happens way too often on reality shows. Most of the time, you know who's going to be eliminated or who's going to win the challenge because of heavy-handed editing. I guess the producers think they're being clever when they have a contestant say "We're for sure going to get so-and-so out this week. The only way they can avoid eviction is to win the next three challenges in a row!", and then the contestant in question does just that. And we're supposed to be shocked and surprised when they pretty much blatantly told us what was going to happen???

I also get so tired of the same sound effects being used on every reality show. We have the chilling bone-rattling sound, the record with the needle abruptly being dragged off it, and I don't remember the others right off. Do we really need sound effects for a reality show? And could they at least use different ones from time to time or different ones for different shows? I wish there was a way to set my tv to turn down or turn off the volume on background music and background noises. Sometimes they get so distracting, they take away from my enjoyment of the show or make it hard to hear what the people on the show are saying.
